Overheard outside Michigan’s locker room: “No block, no rock” and a big game is coming

ANN ARBOR – Michigan’s running game got back on track Saturday against Arkansas State, rushing for 301 yards in a 28-18 win at Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines were not only successful between the tackles, they also showed some explosive plays on the perimeter, including a toss sweep to Kalel Mullings that enabled a 38-yard gain in the fourth quarter.

The team’s receivers had another quiet day, as Michigan only went to the air 18 times, but second-year receiver Fredrick Moore said the wideouts played a role in the team’s efficient running attack.

“I feel like we’re putting an emphasis on running,” Moore said. “‘No block, no rock.’ That’s what (receivers coach Ro Bellamy says). We block like hell every day. I know all my guys are going to put their faces in the fight. I have no doubts about what the receiver is going to do. I know we’re going to do our jobs, 100 percent.”

Moore was one of a handful of players, along with head coach Sherrone Moore, who spoke to the media after the win. Here are notable quotes from the postgame press conference as the team turns its focus to Big Ten play beginning next week against No. 11 USC:

“We just can’t have them. He put the ball in danger too many times, so we made a change and will continue to train and go from there.”

Sherron Moore about Davis Warren’s three interceptions and his substitution in favor of Alex Orji.

“It’s a great feeling to get it going, to assert our will and to dominate physically. It’s just a really good momentum for the conference games and I think the way we played up front today just gives me great encouragement.”

Left Guard Josh Priebe on the team’s dominant running attack after averaging less than 4.5 yards per carry in the first two games.

“We just played Michigan football, knew our technique, knew our assignment and just did our job. I think we did a really good job of selling ourselves, knowing the game plan and knowing what we needed to do to execute it. I think everyone did a good job of executing what they needed to do on the field.”

– Linebacker Ernest Hausmann about the team’s defensive performance after suffering a loss at the hands of Texas last week. The Red Wolves, who managed just 149 yards in three quarters, did not score a touchdown while their starting defense was on the field.

“It really gave me confidence. I tried to practice hard so that the game came easy. I talked to (former Michigan receiver Roman Wilson) on the phone. He told me how he got going, so I just practiced hard, performed in practice and had a goal-oriented approach in practice.”

– Frederick Moore, who gained 38 yards with three catches – all three were on the move.

“It’s a different team and we have to be better at it. That’s simple. It’s not really an excuse for these problems. We have to be better at it and it’s my job to make sure we are and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”

-Sherrone Moore about the team’s indiscipline and seven penalties for 69 yards

“We know this is a big game for us, but we take every single game, every opponent, like it’s a national championship game. So we’re going to respect everything USC does. But before that, we’re going to make sure we analyze this game and learn the things we need to get better at and improve on. Just prepare like we do every week for the next game.”

– Househusband about how confident the team is going into the conference games
