Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel finishes second on the FBS passing TD list

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw his 18th touchdown pass of the season in Saturday’s 38-9 win over No. 20 Illinois, passing former Boise State star Kellen Moore for the second-most TD throws in FBS history at 143.

Gabriel had three touchdown passes and a rushing score – all in the first half – in the No. 1 Ducks’ win. Late in the second quarter, he found Noah Whittington for a 2-yard shovel pass that gave them a 35-3 lead.

“Dylan did what he was capable of doing all year with us. Really being consistent and performing,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said.

Houston quarterback Case Keenum (155) holds the all-time FBS record for passing TDs. However, Gabriel said he doesn’t bother with the record books.

“I chase wins, dude. That’s my goal,” he said. “I don’t want to give you an answer, but to be completely honest, this has been my goal for a long time, but now more than ever. I think you play a long career like me and you recognize a lot of things and I choose to win 100%.

Gabriel, 23, is a sixth-grader and a 2019 graduate. He spent three seasons at UCF (70 passing touchdowns) and two at Oklahoma (55) before moving to Oregon this offseason, where he has put together a Heisman season full of trophies . He has thrown for more than 3,000 yards in four different seasons and is on pace to achieve another this year.

Against Illinois, he had 291 yards on 18 of 26 passing, giving him 2,371 yards on the season. He also had three runs for 5 yards and an interception.

“It’s special because a lot of people came together to make this happen, right?” Gabriel said of his touchdown total. “It comes down to the guys being efficient, the guys being really good with the ball in their hands, the connection between the receivers and the guys up front, but like I said, I’m going for wins and that’s all , which is what I focus on.”

Before the season, Gabriel insisted that his decision to transfer to Oregon rather than stay at Oklahoma or declare for the NFL draft was based on two things: continuing to develop as a quarterback and winning at a higher level than his previous stations.

Oregon is now 8-0 for the first time since 2013 and has three wins over ranked teams. The Ducks will likely remain the No. 1 team in the country when they travel to Michigan next weekend to face the defending champion Wolverines in the Big House.

“Success only counts if you are happy,” said Lanning. “I know our team doesn’t.”
