Omaha man questions structural integrity of his home after giant tree falls

OMAHA, Nebraska (KMTV – A tree branch crashes into the living room ceiling, leaving a fourth-generation homeowner uncertain about the future of his house.

  • Branch crashes into the ceiling of his living room
  • Rick Dibelka is the fourth generation of his family to live in the house
  • Waiting for the insurance company to assess the damage
  • Watch the video to see how big this silver maple was when it hit his house.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE MESSAGE:
“Every time I took a step, you could hear a ch ch ch,” said Dibelka. “The tree just fell all over my house.”

This was where Rick Dibelka came home last Wednesday after the historic storm hit Omaha.

“When I went to the back, the tree was actually folded over the back of the house,” Dibelka said. “Part of the tree was sticking out through the ceiling of my living room.”

It was a tree whose roots had been in Dibelka’s garden for decades.

“When my grandparents moved in in 1975, this tree was already here,” said Dibelka.

A huge silver maple tree crashed into his house.

“That tree was huge. I can’t tell you how many times I went in there myself to prune it or … put a lot of work into that tree,” Dibelka said.

The cleanup took several days, many of them in the dark, while he waited for the power to come back on Sunday evening.

Now I’m going through his house and marking different parts where new cracks have appeared and I notice that the rain has come into his house where the tree had made holes and caused water damage.

“Every day I came back, there were more pieces of the blanket on the floor, more to be swept up and things like that,” Dibelka said.

For Rick, it’s more than just a place to live. He is the fourth owner of this home in his family and is waiting to see what happens next.

“You learn from day to day, it’s a slow process. I have a big family, many friends, everyone wants to help,” said Dibelka.

But while he waits for the insurance premium to be paid out on Friday, his future in this home is initially uncertain.
