Omaha High School special education teacher killed in Sarpy County home shooting

CHALCO, Neb. (WOWT) – A Westside High School teacher and her husband are dead after a domestic violence incident ended in a shooting at a home on the southwest edge of the Omaha metro.

Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis said in an update Monday that officers found 45-year-old Rebecca Geiger dead in her Chalco Hills-area home after an accident around 3 a.m. near South 143rd Street and Shots were exchanged on the Meadows Parkway

Authorities said Geiger’s 19-year-old daughter called 911 and told operators that her father, 44-year-old Rory Geiger, had shot her mother – and that he had pointed a gun at her.

Rory Geiger then turned his attention to the officers, although Davis said it was a person in the house who fired the first shot.

“There were shots fired by a person from inside the house – through the glass window. “One of our officers returned fire,” the sheriff said.

Officers then went into the home and found Rory Geiger dead. Life-saving measures were performed on the victim but he was pronounced dead, officials said at the news conference.

The couple’s two daughters were in the home when the shooting began. Officials said the girls may have been in serious trouble.

6 News was first on the scene Monday morning. Authorities said they had been to the home about an incident about a month earlier and were told not to return.

“Due to a response received at that time, there was an alarm at the home,” Davis said. “It was domestic in nature and we were following up for mental health issues. The next day that person told him, “Be careful; You shouldn’t come back here.’”

Authorities said five officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave. None of them were injured.

Investigators are examining body cameras worn by officers as well as cameras inside and outside the home. They are not yet sure whether Rory Geiger’s fatal wounds were self-inflicted or caused by a gunshot from a Sarpy County deputy.

“At this point it appears that whether he took his own life or was shot by one of our people, their response and advocacy likely saved the lives of these two girls.”

Davis said officers found several weapons inside the home.

“A VERY NICE TEACHER”

Ms. Geiger was a special education teacher who had just started her 10th year at Westside High School.

“She was just a very kind teacher,” said Elizabeth Power of Westside Community Schools. “She was so good at making her students feel seen and deeply loved and truly feel like they belong here at Westside High School, which is so important to every student, especially her students.”
