Olympic Games 2024 LIVE: Women’s marathon updates including Tigist Assefa ahead of Emma Finucane in track cycling

Olympic skateboarder complains about deterioration of his bronze medal

The final day of the Olympic Games is drawing to a close, and there is one final sport to watch at the 2024 Games in Paris, with Team Great Britain battling for those final medals.

The women’s marathon begins on day 16, with Tigist Assefa and Sifan Hassan among the star athletes tackling the daunting 26.2-mile course.

Emma Finucane is back in track cycling and Team GB will be looking to build on its success in the velodrome, despite a brutal collision on Saturday which left Ollie Wood feeling like a ‘crash test dummy’.

Emily Campbell is competing in weightlifting and will compete in the women’s over 81 kg weight class.

The finals in handball, water polo, basketball and wrestling are also worth seeing. Stay tuned Sunday for the latest updates and news ahead of the closing ceremony:

We wait for the next intermediate time at kilometer 20, but Jessica Stenson has a lead of about 10 meters over the chasing group after kilometer 18.

The Australian puts herself in the spotlight here, which is perhaps a strange tactic even before half-time.

Olympics 2024: Women’s Marathon

We are approaching the halfway point in the women’s marathon.

At the front is the Frenchwoman Melody Julien, who climbs one of these devilishly hard hills after 55 minutes.

Sifan Hassan is in the chasing pack, stuck at the back and in danger of being dragged along in her third event of the Games.

Hellen Obiri, Peres Jepchirchir, Megertu Alemu and Tigst Assefa are all at the front and only second behind a huge field.

Olympics 2024: Women’s Marathon

We’ve made it to 15km and temperatures are rising in Paris as the front runners press on at the front of the course. We’ve climbed the big hill that could decide this race and played a big role in yesterday’s men’s marathon.

Hellen Obiri, Peres Jepchrichir and of course Tigst Assefa are all in the leading group, as is Sifan Hassan. But this hill could soon separate them!

Eliud Kipchoge explains why he did not finish the Olympic marathon and reveals his future plans

The Kenyan was dropped in the first half of the race, but fought his way through to the 31st kilometer before he had to leave the course with further pain in his hip.

Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tola won gold despite not being on the team. He took gold as a late replacement for Sisay Lemma and set a new Olympic record on the challenging Paris course with a time of 2:06:26.

Emile Cairess shines at the Olympic Marathon in Paris – can the British team runner now win a major?x

“It’s crazy,” remarked Emile Cairess after finishing fourth in the men’s marathon at the Paris Olympics. He was not referring to his own performance, but to new champion and gold medalist Tamirat Tola, and in particular the Ethiopian’s blistering split times. The 32-year-old stormed home on a sweltering day in Paris, clocking a time of 2:06:26 to secure a new Olympic record thanks to a stunning second half of 61:35.

Belgian Bashir Abdi and Kenyan Benson Kipruto won silver and bronze respectively. But Tola’s 21-second lead was even more impressive given the oppressive conditions and the course, which was quite dangerous thanks to several steep climbs. The race was effectively over after 35km when Tola clocked a stunning 5km time of 14:02, which is six seconds faster than in the first heat of the first round of the men’s 5000m this week.

The total elevation gain of the course was 1,430 feet – significantly more than in Boston (891 feet) or New York (945 feet). That was it for the weakening Eliud Kipchoge, the two-time Olympic champion was seen walking for a time before finally leaving the course at kilometer 31.

Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe win Britain’s first medal in synchronized swimming

Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe won their first Olympic synchronized swimming medal for Great Britain with silver in the women’s duet.

The childhood friends narrowly missed the podium after Friday’s technical performance, which was themed around Big Ben, but Rising Phoenix’s freestyle routine on Saturday was judged the best of the 17-strong field.

A total score of 558.5367 was not enough to displace China from the top spot, but they relegated the Netherlands to the bronze medal by a razor-thin margin of 0.1404 points.

Shortman and Thorpe, whose historic feat led to the Sea Life London Aquarium renaming two nurse sharks after them, were the only pair in the top five who are not sisters.

Georgia Bell takes stunning bronze medal as Faith Kipyegon makes 1500m history

A blistering Olympic record of 3min 51.29sec in Kipyegon proved a blessing that outweighed the pain of the race for her rivals, as the Kenyan brought with her a host of medal hopefuls looking to improve their times. And Bell capitalised, setting a British record of 3min 52.61sec, almost four seconds better than her previous best, and finishing just five hundredths of a second behind Australia’s Jess Hull, who took silver.

Training alongside newly crowned 800m Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, Bell has now had a breathtaking journey, from retiring from the sport in 2017 to rediscovering her passion for running in 2021.
