Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator goals

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables leaves the field after the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, October 12, 2024. Texas One 34-3.

Oklahoma coach Brent Venables leaves the field after the Red River Rivalry college football game between the University of Oklahoma Sooners (OU) and the Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, October 12, 2024. Texas One 34-3.

The Oklahoma Sooners made the difficult decision to part ways with offensive coordinator and play caller Seth Littrell on Sunday night. The Sooners retained co-offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley, who will be in charge on game day. He now has a new co-offensive coordinator in promoted analyst and former Duke offensive coordinator Kevin Johns.

The Sooners need to turn the offense around. Much of how the rest of this season plays out will determine the trajectory of the Oklahoma football program. If Oklahoma finds some success on offense and manages some surprises along the way, they may have the answer to who takes over on a full-time basis.

However, if the offense continues to struggle or get worse, the Sooners will have to look outside of Norman for their next offensive coordinator.

Despite being part of the Oklahoma Sooners’ struggles, Joe Jon Finley will get his first opportunity to compete for the job in the final five games of the season. If they can produce a far more productive offense, the Sooners will give Finley a chance to compete for the job.

Brennan Marion became a hot name after the 2023 season due to his success at UNLV. This dynamic has not slowed in the slightest. Marion and its “Go-Go” offense are averaging 43.6 points per game this season, even amid the Matt Sluka problem after the Rebels won over Houston and Kansas in the first three weeks. They also beat Oregon State and didn’t miss a beat in the quarterback change.

Marion will be one of the hottest names in the coaching search this offseason and should take a look at the Oklahoma Sooners.

Speaking of names that will be at the top of every offensive coordinator’s wish list, Indiana OC Mike Shanahan is. The Hoosiers are having an incredible season, going undefeated and leading the nation with 48.7 points per game.

He had incredible success with the Hoosiers and before that as James Madison’s offensive coordinator from 2021-2023, helping the Dukes transition to FBS football where they averaged 37 and 34 points per game in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Like Marion, Willy Korn was a name that came up in the offensive coordinator search last offseason. Both at Coastal Carolina and now at Liberty, Korn has helped both schools post high numbers on offense. Over the last two seasons, Liberty averaged 38 and 33 points per game, respectively. He has followed Jamey Chadwell to several stops, so it may be difficult to get rid of him, but he is a talented young coach.

He currently leads a Pitt offense that is averaging 40.8 points per game, which ranks 10th nationally for the 6-0 Panthers. Quarterback Eli Holstein is completing 63.5% of his passes and has thrown for 1,700 yards and five touchdowns this season.

In his first stint as offensive coordinator, he led Valdosta State to a record-setting season and a Division II national championship in 2018.
