Oklahoma high school cancels football game after racist insult

The Oklahoman A newspaper reports that Tishomingo High School’s homecoming football game against Antlers High, scheduled for Friday night, was canceled by the Tishomingo Public Schools superintendent after six Tishomingo students appeared in a photo on social media using a racial slur.

The post, which went viral, shows six boys carrying Scrabble tiles that form a racial slur.

“Racism and discrimination in any form will never be tolerated or accepted on our campus and do not reflect the values of our students, our school or our community,” said Superintendent Brandon Moreland. “Our student body and staff include community members of all backgrounds, races and religions, which is one of the many aspects that make our campus exceptional.”

The announcement came late Thursday afternoon. In addition to the game, the homecoming parade was also canceled for safety reasons.

“While it is unfortunate that the actions of a few have impacted a long-standing tradition enjoyed by many in our community, discussions with our partners in local law enforcement reinforce the district’s decision to cancel, with the safety of Tishomingo and Antlers students, fans and participants as our top priority,” a statement announcing the cancellations said.

Although it has not been confirmed, the students in the photo have been identified as members of the football team in some social media posts. As part of the spirit week activities, all students were asked to wear a black t-shirt and were given random Scrabble titles to glue onto the shirts.
