Offer sheets (somehow) work, Kraken makes a commitment

We don’t get them often, but offer sheets work… sort of. On Tuesday, the Edmonton Oilers refused to match the offer sheets signed by Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, meaning the last three offer sheets seen in the NHL have not been matched. The only problem? Although Doug Armstrong talked big afterward, a second transfer between the teams shows he felt kind of bad about it.

Seattle signed a Calder winner on Tuesday after a poor season. Will it pay off for them or did they make a mistake?

Colorado Hockey now

Yes, the Avalanche have Justus Annunen and Ilya Nabokov, so it looks like their future in goal is bright, but you never know with goalies, so I think they should make the call about Yaroslav Askarov.

Last year he couldn’t really keep up in the NHL and now the Flyers are trying everything to get rid of Ryan Johansen’s contract.

Since many have asked, I have not heard of the Avalanche being penalized in this situation. If that were to happen, I think we would have heard about it by now.

News and rumors

Fox: The Blues got their men as the Oilers decided not to match the offers for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.

They overpaid for two good young players, but I guess they’re not close to the salary cap so it doesn’t matter much from the Blues’ perspective. But it doesn’t really make them any better for next season.

X: Doug Armstrong made headlines on Tuesday with some witty quotes…

Yes, that’s all well and good, but it doesn’t sound so cool anymore when you consider that the Blues had to pay an additional third-round pick and a young player just to make the offer documents work.

If you have to throw in a few extra assets to make the deal happen, you might feel bad about it. There’s no need to be nice, it’s just business.

Seattle Times: The Seattle Kraken must be very confident that Matty Beniers can turn things around, as they made a big commitment to him on Tuesday with a seven-year, $50 million contract.

Beniers is a good player, but he’s not a franchise player for an NHL team, at least in my opinion, so this makes sense here. If he was a franchise player, he’d get a lot more. Still, it’s risky, as he’s coming off a 37-point season. Most of Seattle has taken a step back from their insanely high scoring, but for him, it was a big step back. He’ll have to bounce back to show he’s worth it.

San Jose Hockey Now: A team that would really make sense for Askarov is the San Jose Sharks.

Montreal Hockey Now: A certain part of the Canadiens that could improve after the signing of Patrik Laine.
