Oasis cancels 50,000 tickets sold by resellers

LONDON (WKRC) – Oasis is canceling around 50,000 tickets for its UK tour dates that were sold by resellers.

A spokesperson for Live Nation and SJM, Oasis’ tour promoters, spoke to CNN and confirmed that the company is canceling tickets sold through unofficial secondary sites to put an end to price fluctuations.

CNN reported that Oasis fans were the latest to address the issue of ticket scalpers, who buy tickets at face value and resell them for a profit. According to the network, it’s a rare issue where Washington lawmakers are united in their support of the Fans First Act, which imposes restrictions on ticket resellers and increases protections against online bots.

Oasis announced a reunion tour after splitting up in 2009 following an agreement between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. Tickets for the band’s UK and Ireland tour went online in August. Some fans took to social media to post about inflated prices and long waits, and some skipped buying a ticket altogether, according to CNN.

Live Nation told CNN that 1.4 million tickets were available for sale and 10 million fans from around the world were ready to purchase them. After selling out, some tickets were re-listed on secondary websites at inflated prices. CNN reported that some tickets on Viagogo cost up to $7,294.

A representative for Live Nation and SJM told the network that reselling the tickets on secondary websites violated the Oasis tour’s terms and conditions, adding that the canceled tickets were available for sale again on Ticketmaster, a platform owned by Live Nation would be offered.

According to CNN, tickets for the UK and Irish leg of the tour were allowed to be purchased and resold through Ticketmaster or official resale partner Twickets. The network reported that 4% of tickets were sold through secondary sites such as Viagogo.

Live Nation’s spokesperson told CNN that the restrictions were aimed at preventing scalpers from taking advantage of Oasis fans. The company will refund canceled tickets and those who believe their tickets were canceled accidentally can speak to a ticket agent to have their case investigated, according to CNN.

“All parties involved in the tour continue to urge fans not to purchase tickets from unauthorized websites as some may be fraudulent and others may be cancelled. “If fans wish to sell Oasis tickets, they can do so at face value through Ticketmaster or the band’s official resale partner, Twickets,” the Live Nation spokesperson told CNN.

According to CNN, legally purchased concert tickets can be resold safely in the UK, adding that consumer protection measures apply. Viagogo confirmed to CNN that it will continue to allow the resale of Oasis tickets, although it is unclear whether those tickets will also be canceled by Live Nation.

“We want to reassure fans who purchase tickets on Viagogo that we are in full compliance with the laws and guidelines of relevant regulatory authorities. Threats from event organizers to cancel tickets are unfairly targeted at fans who have chosen to purchase on a safe, transparent and strictly regulated resale market. Such actions are clear examples of anti-consumer and retaliatory behavior,” a Viagogo spokesperson told the network.
