NY Mets vs LA Dodgers live scores, updates, lineups from NLCS Game 4

NEW YORK – The New York Mets’ first attempt to protect home field at Citi Field in the National League Championship Series went off with a whimper.

In Game 3, the Dodgers made it a one-sided affair with three home runs, including a huge hit from Shohei Ohtani, shutting out the Mets for the second time in the series.

But the Mets have had their backs against the wall more than once during the 2024 season and will look to prove their resolve in Game 4 on Thursday at 8:08 p.m.

“Stay the course. Keep competing,” Francisco Lindor said after the loss. “Come back tomorrow and give it everything you have. They are a really good team. They have a really good pitching staff and good hitters. You have to give them everything or you won’t win.”

The Mets could be encouraged by the presence of Jose Quintana on the mound for Game 4. This postseason, Quintana pitched six scoreless innings in the team’s Game 3 win in the Wild Card round against the Brewers. Then, in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Phillies, Quintana allowed one run (not an earned one) in five innings before Lindor sent the Mets on with a six-inning grand slam.

The Mets need Quintana to try to repeat that feat as the Dodgers try to take a stranglehold on the series. They lead the best-of-seven NLCS 2-1 with two more games at Citi Field before a tentative return to Los Angeles.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was tagged for five earned runs in three innings in his postseason debut against the Padres in the NLDS, but recovered to throw in five scoreless runs in the Dodgers’ decisive Game 5 win. In Yamamoto’s only start against the Mets, he struck out nine hits in six innings but also gave up four runs (three earned) in a no-decision.

Jose Quintana’s outing ends with traffic in the fourth inning

Carlos Mendoza gave Jose Quintana the hook with one out in the top of the fourth inning after an infield single to Chris Taylor and a walk to Shohei Ohtani.

With Jose Butto in the game, Mookie Betts belted a two-run double in left field. After failing to give up an earned run in his last two postseason starts, Quintana gave up five earned runs on five hits and four walks in 3⅓ innings. He threw 83 pitches and hit two of them.

The Mets get back within one run in the third inning

The Mets are making Yoshinobu Yamamoto work.

In the bottom of the third inning, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor hit back-to-back singles and Pete Alonso drew a walk to load the bases with one out.

Alvarez scored on a fielder’s choice to right that Brandon Nimmo beat to put the Mets up 3-2.

Tommy Edman and Kike Hernandez give the Dodgers the lead in the third inning

Tommy Edman and Kike Hernandez have both been unusual thorns in the Mets’ side throughout the NLCS.

Jose Quintana fought his way to the top of the Dodgers lineup and Edman and Hernandez made him pay. After walking Shohei Ohtani and giving up a single to Mookie Betts, Edman lined an RBI double into the left-center field gap. Then Hernandez made it 3-1 for the Dodgers with an RBI infield single that bounced off the glove of a diving Francisco Lindor.

Mark Vientos evened the score with a solo home run in the bottom

After Mets fans didn’t have much to cheer about in Game 3, Mark Vientos gave them something at the start of Game 4.

Vientos tagged a 95.1 mph fastball from the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto over the right field wall to answer Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff blast. It’s the Vientos’ fourth home run of the postseason, which is their team’s all-time best. The Mets and Dodgers are tied 1-1 after the first inning.

Shohei Ohtani hits Jose Quintana’s first home run

It didn’t take long for the Dodgers to calm the crowd at Citi Field in Game 4.

On the second pitch of the night from the Mets’ Jose Quintana, Shohei Ohtani blasted a solo home run on a hanging sinker 422 feet into the Mets’ bullpen. It’s the first earned run Quintana has given up in three postseason starts this season.
