Notre Dame Stadium was evacuated due to a lightning delay against Stanford

SOUTH BEND — Lightning near Notre Dame Stadium caused Saturday’s football game against Stanford to be delayed between the third and fourth quarters due to weather.

With Notre Dame leading 42-7 against the unranked Cardinal, the ACC team decided to pause play until the weather cleared.

The official break in play took place at 6:10 p.m. Spectators were asked to seek shelter in nearby campus buildings such as the Joyce Center, DeBartolo Hall or the Mendoza College of Business.

Both teams returned to the field at 7:00 p.m. and play resumed at 7:10 p.m., making the delay an even hour. Once play resumed, television coverage switched to CNBC and Peacock.

It was the first weather-related delay to a Notre Dame football game since Sept. 9, 2023 at NC State, when play resumed after a one-hour, 46-minute stoppage in the first half. Notre Dame won 45-24.
