Nothing’s $399 Phone 2a Plus comes to the US via a beta program

Nothing announced Wednesday that its budget Phone 2a Plus is now available in the U.S. However, like the London-based company’s other handsets, there are a few hurdles required to purchase the device in the U.S.

The world’s third-largest smartphone market has been notoriously difficult to conquer for decades, with carrier control being one of the biggest obstacles preventing smaller and emerging brands from making inroads. Even as more users choose to buy phones without a contract and unlocked, carriers continue to play an outsized role in how devices get to market.

While OnePlus, the previous company of Nothing founder Carl Pei, had notable success in breaking through US bureaucracy, the newer company’s strategy in the country relies heavily on its beta program to push mobile phones into the market.

Among other things, the way the device is being distributed is designed to maintain the company’s interest in limited editions while continuing to build the kind of loyal fan base that laid the foundation for OnePlus’ rise to fame.

The device retains Nothing’s familiar transparent aesthetic and Glyph lighting interface, but comes at an affordable price of $399 – a significant discount from the Phone 2’s mid-range entry-level price of $699.

The Plus is a speedy successor to the 2a, which only launched in March of this year. The upgraded handset costs $50 more than its predecessor, but still stays under the $400 mark (albeit just barely). Most of the specs are the same across all devices, but the $50 bump offers an improved CPU and GPU, which are said to deliver 10% and 30% speed boosts, respectively.

Wireless charging speed has been improved and improvements have been made to the selfie camera.

The 2a Plus also launched in India on Wednesday and is available starting at around $335.
