Northwestern Notes: Caruso, Hendricks, Westbrook, George, Collins

Guard Alex Carusowho was acquired from Chicago in the offseason, played no role in the offense thunder through eight games. He is averaging just 2.6 points and 2.5 assists while shooting 23.7 percent from the field. He also averages just 4.8 shot attempts in 19.9 minutes.

Caruso isn’t worried about that aspect of his game.

“I just try to do whatever the team needs to win” Caruso told Joel Lorenzi of The Oklahoman. “The last few years in Chicago, we had guys that were out there. I was a little more on the ball as a lead guard, but here we have Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander), we have Dub (Jalen Williams). Even Cason (Wallace) is a little more on the ball. We have a lot of options. So for me it’s just about figuring out how to help us win games. There aren’t 10 shots a night at the moment.”

We have more from the Northwest Division:

  • jazz forward Taylor Hendricks underwent surgery on his right leg on Wednesday, tweets Andy Larsen of the Salt Lake City Tribune. In the second half of Utah’s game against Dallas on October 28, he suffered a fractured right fibula and a sprained ankle. Hendricks’ injury occurred on a non-contact play when he ran into the offensive lane. Utah has not released a timetable for his return.
  • Russell Westbrook has averaged 25 points, six rebounds and six assists in two Nuggets wins this week. But coach Michael Malone According to Bennett Durando of the Denver Post, he praises another aspect of Westbrook’s game. “I think defensively he was a rock star.” Malone said. “And what I love about Russell Westbrook: He’s been a vet for 17 years, leopards don’t change places, but he tries so hard to be disciplined. He tries to do the things we ask of him and I really appreciate that. Because at 17 you are often who you are. But he cares, man. He’s so invested in this team and what he brings to this team and he’s so hard on himself. I can coach a guy like Russell Westbrook any day.” Westbrook signed a two-year veteran minimum contract with Denver over the summer that includes a player option.
  • The jazz recorded their first win of the season on Monday, thanks Keyonte GeorgeCareer night. According to Larsen, the second-year guard scored 33 points, nine assists and two turnovers in 39 minutes. With Lauri Markkanen (back spasms) and Hendricks out, John Collins played exclusively at power forward and looked much more comfortable, shooting 12-17 for 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Collins couldn’t mesh well with Markkanen and Walker Kessler last season because he wasn’t as involved in screenings and therefore couldn’t take advantage of discrepancies, Larsen adds.
