‘Nobody Wants This’ EPs talk about rapid success and ‘validate’ fan reaction: ‘It gives women hope’

Just days after Nobody Wants This was released on Netflix, the romantic comedy created viral moments and inspired many binge-watches. The Adam Brody and Kristen Bell-led series reached 10.3 million views in its opening weekend.

“It’s really mind-blowing,” series creator Erin Foster told TheWrap. “I couldn’t have prepared – I don’t think anyone could.”

For Foster, whose real-life experience of converting to Judaism to marry her husband (who is not a rabbi) inspired the series, the reaction from fans was “validating” as viewers connected with the series’ themes of “love and dating in “The Thirties” resonate and tie your self-worth to a bad relationship.”

“You see a generation of women saying, ‘Wait a minute.’ “We haven’t seen a committed man on screen yet make an anxiously attached woman feel safe and seen.” “We constantly see the man being fearful and evasive, and the opposite is the case,” added Sara Foster, who serves as an executive producer on the series along with her sister. “It gives women hope.”

While Nobody Wants This has not yet been approved for a second season by Netflix, Erin said she “can’t imagine them not getting a season after all the success.” “I don’t know yet – I hope so. I really want one,” Erin said. “I have a lot of ideas ready.”

Below, the Foster sisters break down the show’s most exciting moments, the Adam Brody trend, and reveal they’ve been “flirting” with a romance between Morgan and Sasha.

TheWrap: The “I Can Handle You” scene went viral on multiple social media platforms. Where did the inspiration for this moment come from and why do you think this moment in particular resonates so strongly?

Erin Foster: We are a generation of strong women who sometimes have a tough exterior and feel torn between, “Are we too much?” Should we be less?”… We’ve been told that you either choose someone someone who is an alpha but is toxic, or someone who is a beta and is healthy, and we don’t like those options.

At the beginning of my relationship with my husband, I was freaking out. I was just nervous about being with a nice guy because I thought he wouldn’t get along with me. Instead of doing what everyone else had ever done when I was freaking out, which was to panic and twist and grip tighter… his instinct was to stay really strong and confident and say, “You “I have to stop – I do.” Going nowhere. I understand what you’re doing, and I don’t think it has anything to do with me.” And I’ve just never been so shaken – I’m allowed to freak out, I’m allowed to be nervous, I’m allowed to even doubt the relationship, and this person will continue to stand securely. I didn’t know if anyone would relate to that or want that – that was a moment that was really important to me.

Sara Foster: It’s a very emotionally intelligent concept that people really understand… healthy boundaries make you feel safe, and within that there’s a boundary that says, “Look, you do this – I have this.”

There was a huge response to Adam Brody, especially among fans of The OC. Did you expect that?

Sara: We knew it (during filming) – we sat behind the monitors and asked ourselves, “Is the world prepared for this?” It was so exciting to even think that people could see this Adam Brody in his 40s.

Erin: He is so perfect in this role. It was so cool to pay attention to him because he deserves that validation.

Did you have Seth Cohen in mind when filming?

Erin: No, I know people have joked about me being on The OC, but I was in my twenties when The OC was on, so I wasn’t an avid The OC viewer. I don’t think of it as a Seth Cohen character because I wrote the character before we had an actor on board, but I kind of like the idea of people seeing him as an adult Seth Cohen. It’s funny because his boss on the show is Rabbi Cohen, and one of the writers just put in the words “Rabbi Cohen” and you have to make sure everyone’s name is cleared. We put it in and Adam highlighted it and was like, “Hey, this might be weird… my name was Seth Cohen on The OC, should we change that?” And Kristen, I think, was like, “I think that’s one good thing… the fans are going to love it. “Keep it.” And he was like, okay, fine, we’ll keep it.

Sara: I have to give Kristen credit: When Kristen joined the project from day one, she was like Adam Brody.

Adam and Kristen played romantic roles in House of Lies. Was that something that came up during the casting?

Erin: She told me that they had experienced something together before. We were with the authors; Room, and she showed us a clip of them making out in House of Lies and… I didn’t see it, but I was still like, “That’s not the character.” Adam has previously said in an interview, ” We’ve done other things together, our chemistry wasn’t like that before.” I think it’s the roles of these two characters that have brought out this intense chemistry at this point in their lives.

Sara: You can’t say it, but I can say it – it’s in the writing.

There has been some speculation, but how old will Joanne and Noah be?

Erin: I would say mid-30s. It’s hard to have them play in their 40s when you want them to be on the path to marriage and children, and I think audiences would enjoy seeing them on the same dating path as seen in season 1. That just sums it up. There’s a time constraint that needs to be addressed, but it’s not always fun to talk about, and so you just want to be able to drag it out a little longer. I met my husband when I was 35 years old and this is a really sweet moment for many women who are nervous about finding their partner.

Season 1 ends with Noah realizing he can’t have a non-Jewish girlfriend and his job as chief rabbi at the same time, but he kisses Joanne anyway. Where does this leave us for the start of Season 2 and what would Season 2 explore?

Erin: It’s a big question mark for a reason. It’s supposed to be, “So what’s going to happen? So do you choose her? So you’re quitting your job? How is that supposed to work? What is it going to look like?’ That was intentional, so we had to figure that out in the writers’ room for season two.

Sara: There is a real desire to delve deeper into Sasha and Morgan’s lives. People love the chemistry between them… that’s the beauty of Season 1. You get so much feedback – you know what people want. It’s beautiful because it’s like a blueprint… People associate me with Morgan – I get so many messages. People are obsessed with knowing who her ex-husband was… We need more about what happened in that relationship… What makes Morgan tick?

How did you test the chemistry between Morgan and Sasha without making it seem completely romantic?

Erin: We’ve been flirting with it being an on-again, off-again romance all season.

Sara: I think season 1 is too unlikeable.

Erin: We played with a lot of different ideas about how far it would go and I think we landed in the right place.

Sara: It’s the perfect thing… Are they flirting? They become a safe space for each other. They relate to each other… people love their dynamic.

With Noah at a potential dramatic turning point, how would you plan to maintain the core of the series in a potential second season?

Erin: We pay attention to what people like, and people definitely enjoy those thoughtful moments of intimacy, vulnerability and connection coupled with humor. If we get a second season, we’ll do our best not to ruin the show and not try to be something different, but continue to be exactly what people fell in love with.

Sara: The journey of watching someone who is avoidant become secure is really exciting, and Noah has a very secure attachment. We’re always just kind of watching him, and I think the audience, based on the feedback, wants to watch him teach her and make her feel comfortable enough to have a secure bond. When did we see this on TV?
