    NOAA winter forecast maps show what to expect in Illinois

    Northern portions of Illinois may experience above-average precipitation this winter.

    That’s the statement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The federal agency’s U.S. winter outlook was released Oct. 17 by the Climate Prediction Center, a division of NOAA’s National Weather Service. The outlook applies from December 2024 to February 2025.

    The first day of winter in 2024 is Saturday, December 21st.

    What is the winter forecast for Illinois?

    The outlook assumes an equal chance of above or below temperatures for most of Illinois. Above average temperatures are forecast for a small portion of far southeastern Illinois.

    The precipitation outlook for much of Illinois shows an equal chance of above or below average activity. Areas north and east of Peoria may experience a wetter winter.

    What is the national winter forecast?

    The U.S. winter outlook predicts warmer-than-average temperatures across much of the southern and eastern U.S. and below-average temperatures in the Pacific Northwest and northern Great Plains. Temperatures are expected to be average across much of the Midwest, including Illinois.

    Above-average weather conditions are most likely in the Great Lakes region, including northern Illinois, and the Pacific Northwest. Drier conditions are most likely in a belt from Southern California to Florida.

    What do the farmers’ almanacs predict for winter?

    NOAA’s U.S. winter outlook is not necessarily consistent with other forecasts, including the Old Farmer’s Almanac and the Farmers’ Almanac.
