No serious injuries: Man drives truck into building in Columbia Falls

There were no serious injuries when the driver of a pickup truck accidentally crashed into the Gateway Building on Nucleus Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Cosmetologist Keri Hill, who operates her business in the northwest corner of the building, said she narrowly missed being hit by the truck, which drove through the wall and window of her business, which is on a lower floor with natural light. She happened to be on the other side of the room but usually works on the side the truck drove into, she said.

The driver of the truck was alert and told a man who initially responded that he did not know what had happened. The truck came down the hill on Nucleus Avenue, crossed the street and drove directly into the building that stands on the corner of Nucleus and Highway 2.

After Columbia Falls firefighters used rescue shears to open the rear driver’s door, the man, an elderly male, was able to wiggle out of the truck with some assistance and walk under his own power to the stretcher, from where he was transported to the hospital by Three Rivers Ambulance for further treatment.

He had a cut on his head but otherwise seemed fine.

Columbia Falls Police are investigating the accident.

There are several commercial spaces available for rent in the Gateway Building, Hill’s is one of them.

The city’s public works department shut off the water supply to the building because it was leaking as a result of the collision.
