No. 7 Panthers beat the Dukes 2-1

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) secured its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory against the Duquesne Dukes (1-1-0, 0-0-0 A10) in front of 1,250 fans at Highmark Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Pitt had a contentious battle with the Dukes in the first 45 minutes. Sarah Schupansky fired three shots in the first half, one of them on goal.

Heading into the locker room, the Panthers had the edge in total shots (9-5) and shots on goal (3-2), with 66 percent total possession.

Pitt was ready for more in the second half. Schupanksy put the Panthers ahead in the 63rd minute with an assist from Sophomore. Say StelzerThe Panthers had three more shots on goal, but couldn’t find the right moment to score again.

In the 84th minute Lucia Wells scored her first career goal after a clean pass from Chloe Minas who provided the assist and doubled the Panthers’ lead.

Duquesne responded in the 87th minute when Margey Brown scored the only goal for the Dukes.

Junior Ellie Breech made three saves against the Dukes to give Pitt the lead.

The Panthers didn’t just lead the afternoon in goals. Pitt had 22 of 11 shots, 11 of 4 shots on goal and 9 of 1 corner kicks.

The Panthers officially open their 2024 home season on Thursday, August 22 at 5 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field when they host Buffalo.
