NLE Choppa announces his coming out

Rapper NLE Choppa has told his fans that he is “coming out,” but without any further context, leaving fans unsure if he was announcing that he is gay.

Choppa posted two photos of himself on X/Twitter on Thursday (September 5), which appeared to be enlarged mirror selfies: one showed only his upper body, the other his entire body.

Next to the pictures he wrote: “I’m coming out.”

The post garnered more than 15 million views and 124,000 likes and 7,000 comments as fans tried to figure out what he meant. “NLE Choppa gay” then started trending on Google searches.

Of course, when people talk about coming out, it is generally used in the context of LGBTQ+ people, metaphorically “coming out of the closet,” describing someone announcing their sexual or gender identity after previously hiding it or having difficulty coming to terms with it, whether consciously or unconsciously.

Several people doubted the credibility of the post and said that it was definitely not a coming out in the traditional sense.

One wrote: “Boy, you’re not gay,” while another said: “This hardcore gay-baiting is not necessary.”

Others said it was probably a “promotional strategy” for his music, while still others claimed they knew all along that NLE was a little “fruity” – internet slang for someone who is LGBTQ+.

Who is NLE Choppa?

NLE Choppa, born Bryson LaShun Potts, is a rapper from Memphis, Tennessee. He rose to fame in 2019 with the single “Shotta Flow,” which reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, and released his debut EP poplar later this year.

Critics have noted that his “lively vocals” and energetic rapping were also present in his subsequent songs.

He has two children, the first is a daughter born in 2020 to his ex-girlfriend Mariah and the second is a son born in 2023 with his then-girlfriend Marissa Da’Nae.

His daughter “changed” his life and “gave him something worth living for,” the rapper said.

NLE recently performed at Atlanta Black Pride, showing their support for the LGBTQ+ community despite not being openly queer.

He was criticized for taking the place of another LGBTQ+ artist, but defended his appearance, saying, “I’m not going to lie, man, every day we wake up and every day we fight acceptance. Whether it’s the color of our skin, whether it’s our weight, whether it’s our sexuality.”

“I’m here to make a difference and show you all that it’s love,” adding that he’s not here to increase his fame.

NLE thanked his LGBTQ+ fans for their support when “Slut Me Out 2” was released earlier this year, writing on X: “I was raised to fuck with whoever fucks with you so thank you for appreciating my craft…my music is for everyone, we don’t discriminate.”
