Here’s a recent NHL story from The Associated Press:

PRAGUE (AP) — New signing Paul Cotter showed off his skills and scored again in Prague as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabers 3-1 on Saturday to win their opening regular-season series in the Czech capital.

Cotter, one of New Jersey’s new additions, also scored a goal and added an assist in Friday’s 4-1 win.

“He has more to offer our group than he has shown in the league,” said coach Sheldon Keefe. “He obviously scored a big goal for us and I thought he played a good game.”

The international games were part of the NHL Global Series. Almost 17,000 spectators came to the games. Two more will be played on November 1st and 2nd in Tampere, Finland, when defending Stanley Cup champion Florida takes on the Dallas Stars.

Defensemen Seamus Casey and Timo Meier also scored and Jack Hughes had two assists for the Devils, who outscored the Sabers 37-18.

“It was close and I was glad our guys stuck with it and found a way,” Keefe said.

Buffalo’s Tage Thompson scored the first goal 8:18 into the second period, slipping the puck under Jake Allen’s pads.

Casey tied the score a few minutes later on a power play in his second NHL game of his career.

Jack Hughes fed Cotter with a cross-ice pass from the right for the unmarked forward to beat Devon Levi in the third period.

Allen stopped 17 shots for the Devils. Levi had 34 saves for the Sabres.

At 6:02 of the opening period, Buffalo forward JJ Peterka was hit by defenseman Brenden Dillon, was helped off the ice and did not return due to an upper-body injury.

Coach Lindy Ruff said Peterka, who was the team’s leading scorer last season with 28 goals, suffered a concussion.

Ruff said he had to change his power play unit after his exit and “we didn’t look great on the power play.”

“We still have a lot of work to do, but it is something that has to be embraced. It’s a challenge at the moment,” he said.

Czech forward Ondrej Palat missed Saturday’s game for New Jersey and flew to America, where his wife was expected to give birth to their second child.

The Devils allowed 3.43 goals per game last season, the fifth-most goals in the NHL. In Prague, they were able to rely on goaltenders Jacob Markstrom and Allen and still have two injured top-six defensemen in Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce.

The Sabers wasted all of their power plays in the series, two on Saturday and another four on Friday. They were tied for 28th in power plays (16.6%) last season.

This is the NHL’s 11th season playing in Europe as part of its efforts to grow fan bases in hockey-loving countries such as the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland and others. Nine of these games took place in Prague. Stockholm, Sweden, is the only place outside of North America that had more.
