Anant Ambani, the son of Asia’s richest man, married Radhika Merchant in Mumbai on Friday. The lavish celebrations attracted worldwide attention. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Nick Jonas and John Cena attended the ceremony.

While extravagant jewels are expected at many Indian weddings, guests at Ambani and Merchant’s ceremony seemed to prefer emeralds. The green gemstones have special significance in India as they symbolize “prosperity, love and new beginnings,” Abhishek Soni, managing director of jewelry brand The House of MBj, told India Today. “This could influence people to choose them for weddings and special occasions,” he added.

Most of the guests opted for traditional Indian attire, including saris, sherwanis and lehengas, as a nod to the couple’s shared culture.

The event, estimated to cost over $600 million, spanned more than five months and featured a series of events, including a performance by Rihanna, where the bride-to-be wore a custom-made Versace dress.
