NFL Week 7 results: The Lions hand the Vikings their first loss of 2024 on a last-minute field goal

The Minnesota Vikings are no longer undefeated. The Detroit Lions handed the Vikings their first loss of the 2024 season with young kicker Jake Bates.

Despite an illegal formation penalty that gave the Vikings one second to make a final play (which ended in the sack of QB Sam Darnold), the Lions won 31-29 and are now in first place in the NFC North.

This was a wild competition from start to finish. The Vikings took the lead with 10 unanswered points in the first quarter, but then the Lions realized they were built to score touchdowns and started doing just that. In the second quarter, Jahmyr Gibbs scored the first of his two touchdowns, then Amon-Ra St. Brown scored a touchdown on the next possession, and then Gibbs ran the ball for his second touchdown.

Then the Vikings took the lead and opened the second half with a touchdown. While the Lions were able to score a TD of their own, they couldn’t keep up with the Vikings’ offensive performance in the fourth quarter. Two field goals and a scoop-and-score from David Montgomery gave the Vikings a one-point lead heading into the final minutes.

Trailing 29:28, the Lions let the clock run down to the 19-second mark. Their victory came on the heels of Bates, a 2023 undrafted free agent who signed with the Lions earlier this year. He had never been involved in such a kick during his short NFL career, but he did it, giving the Lions a 31-29 victory.

Even though his arm didn’t end the game, Lions QB Jared Goff was absolutely determined against the Vikings. He finished the day 22 of 25 for 280 yards and two touchdown passes.

(Bye: Bears, Cowboys)
