NFL Waiver Wire: Week 7 Pickups

James Cook was surprisingly inactive on Monday evening. Both Marvin Harrison (two scores, no catches) and Chris Olave (one catch, five yards) suffered concussions, and Aidan Hutchinson suffered a brutal broken tibia. Coaches Doug Pederson, Kevin Stefanski and even Mike McCarthy have to be on the hot seat, and I would be surprised if there isn’t another firing by next Tuesday. A few young running backs made a splash in Week 6, but no one particularly stands out this week. Oh, and the number of teams saying goodbye in the next few weeks looks like this:

Week 7: 2
Week 8: 0
Week 9: 2
Week 12: 6

Teams with byes this week: Bears, Cowboys

quarterback

PRIMARY GOALS

Drake MayeNE – You have to be impressed with Maye’s rookie debut considering how anemic the Patriots’ offense was leading up to Sunday. Twenty-one points was a season high for New England and Maye had more TD passes (three) than Jacoby Brissett in his five starts (two). Maye may be prone to turnovers as a young QB, but he should be the Patriots’ starter for the rest of the season. FAAB: $5-10

SECONDARY GOALS

Justin HerbertLAC – The Chargers have largely become a run-heavy team and really don’t have a true No. 1 wide receiver. However, Herbert is still a talented quarterback and has his best matchup of the season this week against Arizona. The Cardinals rank 29th among quarterbacks, although that should also be noted

The Cardinals rank 29th among quarterbacks, although it should also be noted that Herbert’s highest fantasy score in a game this season is just 16.3. He has four tough matches coming up after the Cardinals, so he should be considered as a one-week option. FAAB: $3-6

Hail, Mary

Spencer RattlerNO – Rattler had some success in Sunday’s start, but also looked very much like a rookie at times. He fumbled (but recovered) and was intercepted. Throwing for 243 yards is solid (although 6.1 YPA isn’t great) and that’s with the early loss of Chris Olave. It’s unclear when Derek Carr will return, although he will be out for “several weeks,” so Rattler should begin a short week on Thursday. The bad news is that he’ll be facing the Broncos, who allow the fourth-fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. FAAB: $1-3

Run back

PRIMARY GOALS

Tyrone TracyNYG- After his second straight strong performance, Taylor should retain at least 50 percent of the backcourt contacts even if Devin Singletary returns. Taylor had 14 and 22.7 fantasy points over the last two weeks and scored his first touchdown of the season on Sunday night. He is also a good pass catcher who can tackle all three downs and the goal line. The bad news for those who didn’t heed our advice last week to pick him up is that he’s in 45 percent of Yahoo leagues. FAAB: $15-20

SECONDARY GOALS

Kimani VidalLAC – Gus Edwards (ankle) was placed on IR on Saturday, pushing Vidal to the backup spot for JK Dobbins. Vidal scored on a wheel route on his first professional touch and seemed completely comfortable in the Chargers’ offense. He showed pass-blocking ability and finished with 50 scrimmage yards. He won’t take Dobbins’ work away, but it seems reasonable to expect 5-8 touches. FAAB: $5-10

Tyler GoodsonIND – Trey Sermon received a heavy workload (18 carries) but only managed a paltry 29 yards. Enter Goodson, who carried eight balls for 51 yards and caught four passes for 14 yards. Jonathan Taylor could be back this week, giving Goodson a tough start. However, Goodson might have done enough to overtake Sermon on the depth chart and get at least 10 or more touches if Taylor was sidelined again. FAAB: $4-8

Ray DavisBUF – Technically Ty Johnson started Monday night, but that was probably a courtesy considering he was playing against his former team. Davis received the lion’s share of the work and finished with 152 scrimmage yards on 23 touches. Much of that came on an erratic 42-yard passing play, but even without that, he still managed more than 100 yards. How serious James Cook’s injury is and how long he will be out is unknown. However, it appears that Davis is an adequate replacement while Cook is out. Toe/foot injuries tend to linger, so keep that in mind. FAAB: $4-8

Isaac GuerendoSF – Jordan Mason suffered a shoulder injury in last Thursday’s game. He wore a non-contact jersey at practice on Monday, which could actually indicate he could play this week. Guerendo isn’t an elite prospect, but it seems like any running back can succeed in Kyle Shanahan’s system. The problem, however, is twofold: Mason could be back this week and the matchup is against the Chiefs, who are the best team in the NFL against running backs. Please adjust your bids as we receive more detailed information. FAAB: $4-8

Sean TuckerTB – I would like Tucker a lot better if we knew Rachaad White would be out for some time and wouldn’t have a good chance of coming back this week. Tucker exploded for 192 yards from scrimmage and scored two scores that no one expected. It helped that Tampa was in a disastrous stretch of the game, but the numbers are still very impressive. He should at least be used in all leagues and can be used if White’s injury persists and he misses further playing time. FAAB: $4-8

Hail, Mary

D’Onta Foreman, Pierre StrongCLE – Jerome Ford could be out with a hamstring injury and Nick Chubb is expected to return to the backfield this week. Cleveland is unlikely to put much of a load on Chubb in his first game back from last season’s knee injury, so we should see one, if not both, of these guys get a few touches against the Bengals . FAAB: $1-2

Wide receiver

PRIMARY GOALS

JuJu Smith-SchusterKC – JuJu was mentioned last week, but only appears on 33 percent of Yahoo lists. Rice is out for the season and there is good reason to believe he will be the next wide receiver target after Xavier Worthy. It’s possible he’s better than Worthy at full-point PPR and catches a lot of mid-range passes. FAAB: $8-$16

Josh DownsIND – Downs made a big splash in his comeback on Sunday, finishing the game 9-7-66-1. He’s established himself as a 1B option for Michael Pittman and the return of Anthony Richardson should (hopefully) help. He might have a tough time playing against the Dolphins’ defense this week, and he’s already featured in 48 percent of Yahoo leagues. FAAB: $6-12

SECONDARY GOALS

Romeo DoubsGB – Doubs isn’t the Packers’ best wide receiver, but he should still be fantasy relevant. He finished Sunday with a season-high 19.9 fantasy points. Jordan Love has been fantastic when healthy and happy to distribute the ball, but if Jayden Reed or Dontayvion Wicks miss time that would certainly help Doubs. FAAB: $4-8

Michael WilsonARI – Should Marvin Harrison miss time, Wilson should be the top receiver target for the Cardinals along with Trey McBride. The problem is that the Cardinals will face a seventh-or-better defense at wide receiver in their next four games before a Week 11 bye. Greg Dortch and would also see an increase in targets if Harrison is out. FAAB: $3-6

Bub meansNO – The Saints will likely be without Chris Olave on Thursday night, which should give Means another important role for New Orleans. Means finished Sunday at 8-5-45-1, good for a respectable 15.5 fantasy points. Olave has not been officially ruled out and the Broncos are again good against the pass. FAAB: $3-6

Tight end

SECONDARY GOALS

Cade OttonTB – Cotton has been solid but unspectacular in his last four games, averaging more than 10 fantasy points during that span. He has three good matchups coming up and we all know by now what a mess tight end was for Fantasy. It should at least be useful. FAAB: $2-4

Noah FantSEA – In his last four games, Fant has caught 17 passes for 17 goals. The bad news is that he hasn’t found the end zone, scoring 5.4 fantasy points or fewer in four of his six games. Still, he has carved out a small role for himself in this offense and should have 2-4 touchdowns by the end of the season. FAAB: $2-4

defense

Hail, Mary

Cincinnati Bengals D/ST – This has nothing to do with the Bengals being an outstanding defensive team; That has to do with the fact that they’re playing Cleveland. The Browns were terrible on offense and only a blocked field goal for a touchdown kept them in the game with the Ravens. Deshaun Watson has a league-low 5.1 YPA and will now be without Amari Cooper, who was traded to Buffalo. FAAB: $1-2
