NFL Trade Rumor: Detroit Lions have approached Jets about Haason Reddick

As the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 5, questions continue to arise as to whether the Detroit Lions will be buyers after losing Aidan Hutchinson. We’ve already revealed our favorite new additions, but now that deals are actually happening across the NFL, the rumors are starting to pile up too.

The latest comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who says the Lions have reached out to the New York Jets about pass rusher Haason Reddick.

“Haason Reddick would be an obvious player for the Lions to inquire about and I am told they have made contact,” Fowler wrote Wednesday. “Reddick’s recent hiring of agent Drew Rosenhaus, who is known for completing deals quickly, could improve his chances of either remaining with the Jets or facilitating a trade.”

The level of communication here is unclear. The Lions could simply be doing their due diligence, or they could have strong interest in the 30-year-old, two-time Pro Bowler.

The level of their interest likely depends on two things: Reddick’s interest in a new contract and the Jets’ asking price. Reddick has been hoping to get a new contract all season, and the Jets haven’t budged. If he’s looking for a new contract, it might be difficult for the Lions to commit to it, considering they signed big contract extensions this year alone to Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Taylor Decker, David Montgomery, and Alim McNeill.

As for the Jets’ price tag, New York acquired Reddick for a conditional third-round pick from the Philadelphia Eagles. If the Jets trade Reddick to an NFC team, it will mean a second-round pick. So you may be looking for compensation somewhere in that range.

This week, Lions coach Dan Campbell has said multiple times that the team won’t make a hasty trade, but their eyes remain open.

“We’re open to anything, (Lions GM) Brad (Holmes) is working on it, we’re not going to rush it,” Campbell said. “Brad would tell you, he does his homework, the crew does their homework, they look at everything. But we won’t do anything to make it happen, it has to be right. It has to be the right person and everything has to fit together.”
