NFL scores, live updates: Chiefs face 49ers in Super Bowl rematch in Santa Clara

It’s not often that the NFL sets the stage for a nationally televised game on a Sunday afternoon. It’s also not often that we see a Super Bowl rematch early in the season between two teams that are still eyeing a return to February football.

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers had very different starts to the season. Patrick Mahomes’ numbers are down compared to some of his more statistically spectacular years, but the Chiefs continue to win close games. They are 5-0 after an early bye and four of their five wins have come by just one point. The 49ers, meanwhile, have a dominant offense despite injuries to key players – they’re second in the league in passing yards and third in rushing yards – but blew a 3-3 mark en route to a double-digit lead in the second half after six weeks.

While there are two games (Raiders at Rams, Panthers at Commanders) in the 4:00 p.m. ET window on CBS, national audiences will see Kansas City at San Francisco at 4:25 p.m. ET on Fox.

You can chat about it all with other Yahoo Sports fans and NFL experts using our new game discussion feature in the Yahoo Sports app. You can download the app for Apple here and for Google here and make sure you already have the latest version. This allows you to open the game page, tap “Join the Discussions,” agree to the guidelines, and then join in the fun.

(Bye: Bears, Cowboys)

Live36 updates

  • Washington dominates against Carolina

At the end of three quarters, Washington is a complete blast as the Commanders lead the Panthers 37-0. Marcus Mariota, who replaced the injured Jayden Daniels in the first quarter, was 15 of 19 for 165 yards and two touchdowns in three quarters, and Brian Robinson Jr. has 71 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

  • Brock Purdy sneaks it for San Francisco

A clever QB sneak leads to a TD. Anders Carlson missed the PAT, giving the Chiefs a 14-12 lead.

  • Mahomes chose again

Deommodore Lenoir with a potentially game-winning play as Xavier Worthy goes down and the 49ers start with the ball just outside the red zone.

  • That’s two touchdowns on the day for Kyren Williams

  • The 49ers settle for a field goal to end the first half

14-6 at halftime in San Francisco. The 49ers scored their first sustained drive of the game on their final series, but were unable to finish it inside the 10-yard line. Kansas City gets the kickoff for the second half.

  • Brandon Aiyuk lands on the field after a big hit

The 49ers were trying to score late in the first half, and Aiyuk needed help from the coaches after San Francisco made a catch to get into the red zone.

  • 49ers in business with a BIG play

Brock Purdy finds George Kittle for a big gainer – 41 yards – putting the 49ers in scoring position late in the first half.

  • Deebo Samuel only played three snaps in today’s game

  • From veteran to veteran for the TD

The Commanders get what they want against Carolina, and things were already getting ugly in Washington in the first half.

  • Kareem Hunt adds a second rushing TD on the day

The Chiefs are up 14-3 and appear to be firing on all cylinders. The Chiefs have 157 yards, the 49ers have 36 yards and KC is 4-for-6 on third down while the 49ers are 0-for-4.

  • The Rams defense gets on the field

Came Curl with the scoop and the score for the Rams, who take a 14-3 lead.

  • Mahomes Magic to Xavier Worthy on a third down

It’s no longer really surprising, but it still provides a WOW experience.

  • Mecole Hardman with the biggest play of the game on a 55-yard punt return

  • Kyren Williams gets the Rams on the board and ahead of the Raiders

  • Kareem Hunt gives KC the lead

The seven-play, 70-yard drive — which included a single-wing play with both Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz on the field together — is capped by Hunt’s short TD run.

  • Noah Gray moved the bat in the first half

Gray had three catches for 57 yards in the first quarter for the Chiefs and is the game’s leading receiver.

  • Washington scores a turnover on downs

  • The 49ers strike first with a 55-yard field goal

Anders Carlson, the 49ers’ third kicker in the last three weeks, puts San Francisco ahead with the first points of the game.

  • The Chiefs-49ers first quarter was a defensive slugfest

Both teams have one interception and Patrick Mahomes has already been sacked twice. Additionally, the Chiefs were stuffed with a fake punt on a 4th-and-1. Two minutes before the end of the first quarter there is still no score.

  • Even without Jayden Daniels, Washington is in complete control against Carolina

Brian Robinson Jr. manages to put Washington up by three points in the second quarter.
