Jalen Ramsey is reportedly now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Cameron Wolfe reported Friday that the Miami Dolphins and Ramsey agreed to a new three-year deal worth $72.3 million, rebalancing the cornerback market with an average annual value of $24.1 million.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter put the deal into perspective:

Updated: The highest paid CBs in the NFL on an annual basis are now:
🏈Jalen Ramsey: $24.1 million
🏈Patrick Surtain: $24M⁰🏈Jaire Alexander: $21M⁰🏈AJ Terrell: $20.25M⁰🏈Denzel Ward: $20.1M

Ramsey was previously signed until the 2025 season. This means he will be in Miami for the foreseeable future, trying to lead the team to playoff success.

The Florida State product was the No. 5 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and began his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville traded him to the Los Angeles Rams during the 2019 season and the NFC West team traded him to Miami ahead of the 2023 season.

He had a solid performance in his first season with the Dolphins, recording 22 tackles, five passes defensed and three interceptions in ten games, but missed seven games after undergoing meniscus surgery during the offseason.

Injuries are again a concern at the start of the 2024 season, as he has suffered a torn thigh and is therefore uncertain about his ability to play in Sunday’s opening game against the Jaguars.

But he still shows leadership qualities.

“I’ve never been more proud of a player who’s not practicing, honestly. No bragging,” head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters. “He just makes me proud because he knows how important he is to this team and what he wants to accomplish with the team as a captain. … I know he’s doing everything he can today and there were no setbacks today.”

Now, with a new contract in his pocket, Ramsey can work toward his return.

From Miami’s perspective, they have secured one of the best cornerbacks of their generation at age 29. Ramsey’s resume includes a Super Bowl title with the Rams, three First Team All-Pro nominations and seven consecutive Pro Bowl nominations.

There are still some concerns after he missed seven games last year and his Pro Football Focus grade dropped from 86.4 in 2022 to 66.4 in 2023, but Ramsey’s power potential remains one of the best in the league for a team looking to win in the next few years.
