News from Southampton: Archer comes from Villa – a good signing?

Southampton have signed Cameron Archer from Aston Villa with a four-year contract.

The striker joins us after spending last season on loan at Sheffield United in the Premier League, having previously played for Preston North End and Middlesbrough.

“I’m really happy to be here,” said the 22-year-old. “I had a good conversation with the coach. Of course, he told me everything I needed to know. That was one of the main reasons why I’m here: his style of play, his coaching and his effort to improve me as a player.”

Saints boss Russell Martin added: “Cameron is a really exciting young talent with huge potential for improvement and we are delighted to have him in the group in time for our first Premier League game. He has had a really good pre-season – he is fit and ready to go.”

“With his speed and goal-scoring ability, he is a constant threat and has learned a lot from playing regularly in the Premier League last season. Now it’s up to us to help him develop and show how good he can be at this level.”

Is this another good signing for the Saints ahead of their season in the top flight? Are there any other players Martin should consider bringing in to strengthen the team, including the possible loan of Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu?
