Brunswick County and the National Weather Service in Wilmington are monitoring potential Tropical Cyclone 8. The broad low pressure system will continue to weaken and conditions will improve across the area through tonight (Monday, September 16).

Latest NWS briefing from Monday, September 16, 5:00 p.m.

  • Minor coastal flooding and some beach erosion, particularly at high tide this evening.
  • All beaches experience strong rip currents and rough surf.
  • Gusty winds (30 to 40 mph), mainly associated with thunderstorms.
  • Additional rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, mostly north of the Lumberton-Wilmington border, and 1 to 2 inches possible in parts of the Pee Dee region from near Bennettsville to Darlington and Florence.
  • Even though the rain has stopped, floodwaters will continue to accumulate in low-lying areas with poor drainage, so exercise extra caution when travelling through the area tonight.
  • Isolated tornadoes are possible through this evening, especially north of the Elizabethtown-Wilmington border into the early evening hours.
