New York Yankees news: Cole’s early departure and Soto’s upcoming contract

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Gerrit Cole gave the Yankees a scare on Monday night when he left a win over the Rangers with an injury. However, as Joyce reports, Cole’s early exit was due to a cramp in his leg, which the Yankee star was “not too worried about.” After allowing three or fewer runs in six consecutive starts, Cole should be on track to make his next scheduled start this weekend.

The Athletic | Tim Britton: ($) As Juan Soto continues to dominate in his final year, Britton compares his position to mega free agents of years past, including Shohei Ohtani and Alex Rodriguez, to predict the contract he will receive this offseason. Considering his offensive production so far, Britton projects Soto can set either an average annual value or a total value record, if not both. Two hypotheses he throws out there are a 14-year, $560 million contract or a 12-year, $540 million contract, which would surpass Ohtani’s record-breaking contract in current value by more than $100 million.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Monday marked the first MLB reunion of good friends and former high school teammates Anthony Volpe and Jack Leiter. The first round went to Volpe, who hit a single in his first at-bat and narrowly missed a home run in his second against the Rangers right-hander. Volpe called the chance to face his longtime buddy “special” and “significant.”

Yahoo Sports | Danny Abriano: For the third time this year, Aaron Judge was named AL Player of the Month. The Yankees captain hit .389/.530/.865 with 12 home runs in 26 games in August.

Bronx Times | Ethan Marshall: On September 27, the Yankees will host a “Bronx Zoo Night” at the stadium to celebrate the institution’s 125th anniversary. Five dollars from each ticket sold will go to the Bronx Zoo, and visitors will receive a gift of a leopard-print Yankee cap.
