NEW YORK – Dozens of schools in New York and New Jersey are affected by a recall of meat and poultry products possibly contaminated with listeria.

The recall expanded to include nearly 12 million pounds of products, including prepared meals, sent to schools, restaurants and major retailers, federal officials said.

According to the USDA, BrucePac chicken samples tested positive for listeria

The updated recall includes prepared salads, burritos and other foods sold at stores such as Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target and Walmart. The meat used in these products was processed at a BrucePac-operated production facility in Durant, Oklahoma.

BrucePac, based in Woodburn, Oregon, sells pre-cooked meat and poultry to industrial, food service and retail companies across the country.

According to federal officials, recalled foods were sold under numerous brands, including: 7Eleven, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Kitchen, Atkins, Bell & Evans, Boston Market, Central Eats, Dole, Eat!, El Monterey, Fresh Express, Fusia, Giant Eagle, Gordon Choice, Good & Gather, Great Value, HEB, HMS, Home Chef, Jenny Craig, KitchenMate, Kroger, Little Salad Bar, Marketside, Meijer, Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods, Michelina’s, Mom’s Meals, RaceTrac, Raley’s, Ready Meals, Red’s, Save Mart, Signature Select, Taylor Farms, Trader Joe’s, Udi’s, Wegmans, Whitsons.

U.S. Department of Agriculture officials said routine testing found potentially dangerous Listeria bacteria in samples from BrucePac chickens.

No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the recall, USDA officials said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not opened an investigation into the outbreak, a spokesman said.

How to identify products in the BrucePac recall

The USDA released a 342-page list of hundreds of potentially affected foods, including chicken wraps sold at Trader Joe’s, chicken burritos sold at Costco and many types of salads sold at stores like Target and Walmart become. The food was also sent to school districts and restaurants across the country.

The callback, published October 9thincludes food produced between May 31 and October 8, 2024. The recalled foods can be identified by the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” within or under the USDA inspection mark.

Consumers can check the USDA recall page for potentially affected products. Recalled foods should be thrown away or returned to stores for a refund, officials said.

Symptoms of a listeria infection

Eating foods contaminated with listeria can lead to potentially serious illness. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1,600 people in the U.S. become infected with Listeria bacteria each year and about 260 die from it.

Listeria infections typically cause fever, muscle pain, and fatigue and can cause neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms can appear quickly or up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food. The infections are particularly dangerous for older people, people with weakened immune systems or pregnant women.
