Following recent announcements on social media, the return of the Backyard Sports video game series has been confirmed.

Playground Productions released an official reveal trailer for the rebooted series on Tuesday, introducing a new baseball game.

The trailer features Backyard Sports icons Pablo Sanchez, Stephanie Morgan, Achmed Khan, Pete Wheeler and Kiesha Phillips.

The upcoming game will be the first release in the franchise since 2015, when Backyard Sports: Baseball and Backyard Sports: Basketball were released for iOS and Android.

While it’s unclear how many people outside of Playground Productions had inside information about the relaunch, there have been numerous indications in recent weeks that something was afoot.

Kansas City Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. used a special Pablo Sanchez bat against the Cincinnati Reds last weekend as part of MLB Players Weekend, and he even hit a home run with it in Friday’s 7-1 win.

Tess DeMeyer of The Athletic noted that no official release date has been set for the new game, but an announcement from Playground Productions said it would be “in the coming months.”

Chris Waters, Chief Product Officer of Playground Productions, issued a statement about the relaunch (h/t DeMeyer):

“We’re incredibly excited to introduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players. We’re committed to preserving the look and feel that made the original games so special, while updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audiences expect. I can’t wait to show fans what we’re building on the Playground.”

Interest in the franchise seemed to increase earlier this year when Jason and Travis Kelce talked about it New heights Podcast, with Jason saying he was “secretly checking” who owned the rights to the franchise with a view to potentially buying them and rebooting the series.

The franchise started in 1997 with Backyard Baseball. Over the years, football, basketball, soccer, skateboarding and hockey have been added to the list of games in the Backyard Sports franchise.

Professional stars such as Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Derek Jeter, Mike Trout, LaDainian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning and Michael Vick have all appeared in previous games for the franchise.

A total of 38 games were released in the series, not including the relaunch title.
