New bodycam footage shows police response to shooting at Trump rally

Recently released footage from local police in Pennsylvania paints a clearer picture of the moments surrounding the attempted assassination of Donald Trump in July.

In a bodycam video, a local officer tells his colleagues that he had instructed the US Secret Service in advance to secure the building the shooter used.

Another shows the moment a police officer is hoisted onto a roof and sees the shooter seconds before he opens fire at the Trump rally.

Trump was hit by a bullet in the shooting, one person was killed and two others were seriously injured.

Photos of the body and dashboard were released by Butler Township police on Thursday.

They capture moments of frustration, confusion and misunderstanding in the moments before and after the attack.

In one of these reports, a local official said he had asked the Secret Service to occupy the building from which the gunman fired a few days before the rally.

“I told them they had to post people there,” he said, according to a video received from the Wall Street Journal.

“I told them that on Tuesday.”

The open-air rally took place on Saturday, July 13th.

The officer appears angry as he tells his colleagues that he has asked the Secret Service to secure the building.

“I talked to the Secret Service people and they said, ‘Yeah, no problem, we’ll post people here,'” the officer says.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was shot and killed by the Secret Service sniper team after firing eight shots in Trump’s direction from a rooftop just outside the rally’s security perimeter.

Trump, who was on stage delivering a speech to his supporters, suffered an injury to his ear before ducking and being pulled off the stage by Secret Service agents.

Another video shows a Butler County police officer being lifted onto a roof by a colleague, where he discovers Crooks.

When he sees that the shooter is armed, he quickly drops down.

He is then seen running to the other side of the building and to his police car to get a gun.

About 40 seconds after the officer first sees the shooter, Crooks shoots Trump.

The officer calls out to his colleague: “He is standing upright… Who is watching him?”

The video then shows police officers trying to get onto the roof.

“He’s wearing glasses and has long hair,” the officer who saw Crooks tells them, adding that he has a book bag and an AR rifle with him.

After climbing onto the roof, officers see Crooks’ body.

The first police officer is then heard saying, “I stuck my head up there all by myself like an idiot,” adding that he “started shouting” that there was a shooter on the roof.

“Were you on the same frequency?” he is heard asking. with reference to the police radio.

In other footage, an officer appears confused as to why the roof was unmanned.

“Why weren’t we on the roof… Why weren’t we?” he asks.

The secret service had stationed three snipers in one of the adjacent buildings.

One of them had spotted Crooks earlier in the day after local police received reports of a suspicious person at the rally.

The Secret Service sniper then took a photo of Crooks before leaving his post to search for the suspect.

In a statement Thursday, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the agency was reviewing the footage.

“The U.S. Secret Service thanks our partners in local law enforcement who acted courageously in searching for the shooter that day,” he said.

“The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was a failure of U.S. intelligence, and we are reviewing and updating our protection policies and procedures to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again.”

The incident is also being investigated by the FBI and a bipartisan panel of 13 members of the House of Representatives.
