“I am lucky to be here, alive, standing and hugging my family, and I am expected to make a full recovery,” Schulman said on Instagram.

Nev Schulman says he is “lucky to be alive” after breaking his neck in a bicycle accident.

The Dancing with the stars The 39-year-old alumnus shared on Instagram on Saturday, August 10, that the incident occurred on a Monday while he was on his way to his son’s school to drop him home.

“I never made it to pick up my son from school on his bike,” he wrote. “In some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone when I hit the road. Me and the truck. And then, I guess, the sidewalk. I was alone and unconscious.”

He said he was taken to hospital where he was informed of the extent of his injuries. “I broke my neck,” he explained.

“Stable fractures. I’m not paralyzed,” he continued. “My hands were a question mark for a minute, but the human body is incredible and so are PEOPLE.”

Schulman then thanked the emergency services and the staff at Southampton’s emergency room and Stony Brook’s intensive care unit who provided him with medical care.

In the post, he shared several videos of staff helping him with his recovery, including one showing physical therapists helping him get out of bed so he could practice walking again.

Another clip showed him high-five a coworker while practicing walking down a hospital hallway with a neck brace and a physical therapist walking beside him.

Schulman also shared photos taken in the hospital, including a snap of him lying in his hospital bed wearing a neck brace and scans of his neck injury. He also showed off his purple surgical scar on his neck.

Another video showed Schulman’s bike helmet broken before the image panned to him on the bed giving a thumbs up. On the table were several drawings of his children with his wife Laura Perlongo – Cleo James, 7, Beau Bobby Bruce, 5, and Cy Monroe, 2. In another clip, his children hugged him as he stood up and hugged them.

“I’m lucky to be here, to be alive, to hug my family and to be expected to make a full recovery,” he said. “And I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude. For the big and small things before the accident and now for everything moving forward.”
