NCAA champion Youssef Ramadan returns to Virginia Tech for the fifth time

2023 NCAA Champions Youssef Ramadan has confirmed that he will return to Virginia Tech for his fifth COVID-19 year.

Ramadan arrived from Egypt as a freshman and made an immediate impact for the Hokies, swimming to an ACC title in the 100 butterfly in 2021 and subsequently qualifying for the 2021 NCAAs. He did not swim the 100 butterfly at the 2021 NCAAs, but made the A final in the 50 freestyle, where he finished eighth. He also finished 10th in the 100 freestyle and scored a total of 18 individual points as Virginia Tech finished 11th as a team.

As a sophomore, he won ACC titles in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. He reached two NCAA A finals, placing third in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 50 freestyle. He scored 33.5 individual points and Virginia Tech finished 11th as a team.

As a junior, he won his first individual NCAA title, swimming the 100 butterfly in 43.15 seconds. He also placed fifth in the 50 freestyle (18.82) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (41.61). His 45 individual points led the team to a ninth-place finish.

Last season, he returned to the A final of the 100 butterfly, finishing fourth with a time of 43.95. He also finished ninth in the 100 freestyle and eleventh in the 50 freestyle for a total of 32 individual points. He again led Virginia Tech to a 9th-place finish.

His return is crucial as he was also a member of four of the team’s relay teams at the 2024 NCAAs, all four of which scored points and three finished in the top eight. The team had only two other individual point scorers, Carles Coll Marti and AJ Pouch. Pouch notably graduated last season after completing his fifth year.
