NBA fines 76ers $100,000 for statements about Joel Embiid injury; The team has no timetable for his or Paul George’s return

Joel Embiid and Paul George still aren’t ready to play for the Philadelphia 76ers this season, and Nick Nurse doesn’t really want to talk about it.

However, the NBA fined the team $100,000 for public comments about Embiid’s health on Tuesday afternoon. The penalty came after the team launched an investigation into Embiid’s status after he missed the season opener earlier this month. The investigation, the league said, confirmed that Embiid was unable to play in that game.

The 76ers head coach largely ruled out questions about the health status of the two stars on Tuesday after ruling both out of Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Pistons. Both Embiid and George are dealing with knee injuries and have yet to return to action this season.

While both players participated in portions of practice on Tuesday, Nurse ruled both out for Wednesday’s game at the Wells Fargo Center. However, Nurse did not specify when they would be able to make their season debut.

“We want these guys to play and we want them to be healthy and we want them to play great and we want them to play great all season,” Nurse said. “Then my main focus is that I have to do the job that I have to do. I have to try to get this team to play as well as possible tomorrow night. That requires a lot of my concentration and whatever. … I’m just trying to focus on my job.”

Embiid has been ruled out of the season due to what the 76ers describe as left knee management. He played in just 39 games last season due to knee injuries, but returned in time for the playoffs and played with Team USA in the gold medal series at the Paris Olympics this summer.

Embiid also said he lost more than 25 pounds last offseason to stay healthy and take pressure off his knees. It is unclear what exactly is holding him back with his knee. Embiid also received a technical foul on Monday for waving a towel near his bench in the final moments of their overtime win against the Indiana Pacers on Sunday.

The league also opened an investigation into the team’s handling of his injury, but the investigation concluded that the 76ers did not violate player involvement policies. The team still made statements that were “contrary to Embiid’s medical condition,” the NBA said, which led to the fine.

George, who signed a four-year, $212 million contract to join the 76ers last offseason, suffered a bone bruise in his knee after falling in a preseason game. He suffered no structural damage to his knee, but it is unclear when he will be able to enter court.

The 76ers, who have a 1-2 record, host the Pistons on Wednesday and then the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Next week they will embark on a three-game road trip to the West Coast.

Based on Nurse’s latest comments, it’s still unclear when Embiid and George will be ready to play for the 76ers.
