Native trees and shrubs available at annual fundraiser

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Penn State Extension’s Master Watershed Steward program is hosting its fifth annual native tree and shrub sale this fall at 27 locations across the state, including Wayne County.

A fundraiser for the program, the sale will feature 18 varieties of native trees and shrubs. Organizers are accepting orders through Wednesday, August 28. Curbside pickup will be available in September or October. Pickup dates and times vary by location.

Watershed managers plant trees to capture and infiltrate stormwater, stabilize soils and filter pollutants. Whether residents are looking for trees for privacy, foliage, shade, to attract pollinators or to create a beautiful landscape, organizers note that the program offers a variety of trees and shrubs.

Trees and shrubs are available in one-gallon containers for $20, two-gallon containers for $30, and three-gallon containers for $40.

The watershed management masters guarantee that you will receive a healthy specimen upon collection. Due to variations in planting, site conditions and care, no guarantee or refund is possible after the tree has been collected.

Organizers urge residents to consider above- and below-ground utilities and the size of the mature tree when selecting a tree for their property – and to always call 811 before digging.

Details about each tree – such as its average mature height, sun and soil moisture requirements, and flowering time – are listed on the ordering website.

Orders can be placed online or by phone for one-day curbside pickup in the fall. All items must be pre-ordered. Plants cannot be purchased at pickup locations. Proceeds from sales benefit the Master Watershed Steward’s activities in this region.

The program offers pickup locations in many counties, including Wayne, Lackawanna and Susquehanna.

The Penn State Master Watershed Steward program provides comprehensive training in watershed management to volunteers who, in turn, educate the community on watershed management based on university research and recommendations. The program was created to build local capacity for managing and protecting watersheds, streams and rivers by training and empowering volunteers across the state.
