Nations League: Van Dijk sees red for Dutch, Germany’s Undav strikes twice | Nations League

Denzel Dumfries headed the late equalizer Netherlands to save a point in a 1-1 draw Hungary in their Nations League game on Friday in Budapest, where the visitors finished with ten men after their captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off.

Hungary took the lead in the 32nd minute when Tijjani Reijnders lost the ball in midfield and Zsolt Nagy’s cross to the back post was volleyed away by Roland Sallai, who had been a doubt before kick-off due to injury.

The Dutch created numerous chances but faced a frustrating defeat, made worse when Van Dijk received two yellow cards in three minutes before Dumfries headed Cody Gakpo’s free-kick to equalize.

Hungary had hoped for a first win over the Netherlands in 40 years, but ended a run of nine consecutive defeats against the Dutch.

It was a ball game for the visitors, with Hungary trying to hit them on the counter-attack, which they did as Sallai skillfully finished the opening goal. Earlier, he hit the post after being fed by Dominik Szoboszlai on the edge of the penalty area, and Sallai directed his shot against the woodwork.

The Netherlands had more than 80% possession in the first half but created few chances, although Gakpo forced Hungarian goalkeeper Denes Dibusz into a good save from deep.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first, as the home team held back and maintained their lead. With only Dibusz to beat, Reijnders delayed his shot and pushed past the goal with a heavy touch to deny the chance before deciding to shoot when a ball would have gone across goal to Dumfries, who The latter missed a pass at the back post.

As the Dutch’s frustration mounted, Van Dijk received a yellow card for inconsistency before a second yellow card for a foul left the visitors down to 10 men for the final 11 minutes. Dumfries’ powerful header from Gakpo’s assist earned them a point on a night that looked like it would end in frustration.

The Germany Striker Deniz Undav scored twice in six minutes in the first half to secure a 2-1 away win Bosnia and Herzegovina and keep them at the top of their group.

The Germans, who were missing several players due to injury, including Jamal Musiala, Niclas Füllkrug and Aleksandar Pavlovic, were in control from the start but, apart from a Pascal Gross shot wide of the goal, had no clear chances against the disciplined hosts.

They had to wait until the half-hour mark to break the deadlock when Robert Andrich sent a cross to Florian Wirtz, who, with his back to the Bosnian goal, headed Undav into the goal for the first time. Six minutes later, the striker doubled his lead by directing a cross from Maximilian Mittelstädt into the goal. The visitors should have scored more goals and put the ball into the net three more times just to have the effort ruled out for offside.

Bosnia reduced the deficit when Edin Dzeko scored with a header at the far post in the 70th minute to add some excitement to the game, but they were unable to equalize.

“Overall, I’m happy with the performance,” said national coach Julian Nagelsmann. “We didn’t allow too many counterattacks. We perhaps didn’t score enough goals for the dominance we had. But we had to see how hard we wanted to get a third goal after conceding a goal and making a few substitutions. And we also had to think about the next game on Monday (against the Netherlands).”

Germany leads Group A3 with seven points from three games, while the Dutch are in second place with five points. Hungary has two points and Bosnia is in last place with one point.
