Mudslides trap vehicles and cover highway near Glenwood Springs

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A Colorado highway was completely closed after several cars were caught in mudslides near Glenwood Springs overnight.

Nearly a mile-long stretch of Colorado Highway 82 is buried under 3-4 feet of mud and debris following the landslides. The affected area is 5 miles south of Glenwood Springs toward Carbondale.

“All drivers and passengers were safely evacuated last night. There were no injuries,” the Colorado Department of Transportation said.

With three front loaders, an excavator and nine trucks to remove the debris, CDOT has been working around the clock since it was first alerted to the landslides late Saturday morning.

“CDOT crews worked last night to cut a trench through the bedrock to allow water to drain from the flooded area,” CDOT said.

CDOT offers the following advice to all motorists traveling in the state due to the rainy weather Colorado has experienced over the past week.

– Pay attention to weather conditions and forecasts. Heavy rains can cause flooding, landslides and rockfalls.

– Never drive through flooded areas because you do not know how deep or how fast the water is flowing.

– Just a few centimeters of water or mud are enough to keep a medium-sized car afloat and easily wash it off the road.

– Landslides and floods can block the roadway and prevent drivers from knowing exactly where to go. Wait until the water recedes or the roads are cleared.

– During floods, invisible debris and hazards can be hidden beneath the water surface and in the mud.
