  • DC City Councilman Arrested for $156,000 Bribery

WASHINGTON – D.C. Council member Trayon White Sr., who represents District 8, was arrested yesterday on bribery charges, according to a criminal complaint filed against him. White, 40, chairs the council’s Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs Committee, a role in which he oversees several city agencies, including the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS).

The lawsuit alleges that White agreed to accept $156,000 in cash in exchange for using his influence to pressure government officials at the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) and DYRS. This pressure was allegedly used to secure the renewal of contracts valued at $5.2 million for two companies that provide violence intervention services in Washington, D.C. The $156,000 White agreed to accept reportedly represented three percent of the total contract value.

According to the complaint, White’s arrangement with a confidential human source who owned the companies involved was documented on video. The source allegedly made four separate cash payments totaling $35,000 to White between June and August 2024. The complaint also mentions that the source provided White with a document outlining how his three percent share was calculated.

The arrest and indictment were announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Scott of the Criminal and Cyber Division of the Washington, DC Field Office, Inspector General Daniel Lucas, and Special Agent in Charge Kareem A. Carter of the Washington, DC Field Office of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI).

“Because the investigation into the alleged bribery scheme involved contracts that might soon be awarded and other possible official actions that might be taken, our office took swift steps to resolve the alleged crimes we were investigating,” said U.S. Attorney Graves.
