Motion Picture Academy examines 11 science and technology areas for 2024 awards ceremony

LOS ANGELES —

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that eleven different scientific and technical investigations for 2024 have been launched in advance of the Scientific and Technical Awards on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

These investigations are made public so that individuals and companies with devices or claims of innovation in these areas can submit their achievements for review. The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee has initiated investigations in the following areas:

–Character dentures
–On-set tools for live compositing of virtual characters and environments
–In-camera rendering or playback engines for visual effects
–LED processors for visual effects in the camera
–Image-based lighting for CG rendering
–Heat protection gel for the safety of stunt performers
–Artist-friendly tools for creating setups for anatomical character simulation
–Final frame post-processing noise reduction for CG rendering
–Dynamic time adjustment of multiple moving microphones
–Stabilized multi-camera systems for recording wide FOV plates
–Portable motion bases with six degrees of freedom that can carry heavy loads

“The awards committee is delighted to see such a wide range of applicants representing innovations across our industries. Our diverse committee of industry experts will examine 11 areas of advancement, including character dentures, fire-resistant stunt gels, and CG rendering techniques. The continued evolution of production and post-production, and the technologies that bring them together, such as virtual production components related to in-camera visual effects, underscores the evolution of film workflows based on these advances,” said Scientific and Technical Awards Committee Co-Chairs Darin Grant and Raymond Yeung.

The deadline to submit additional entries is Thursday, September 5th at 5:00 p.m. PT. For more information about the Scientific and Technical Awards or to submit a similar technology, click here.

After thorough research in each technology category, the committee will meet in the fall to vote on recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Directors, which will make the final award decision.

The scientific and technical awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Former President Donald Trump was active on his social media accounts as Democrats gathered in Chicago for their convention, yet some of his posts don’t bear much resemblance to reality. In the lead-up to the Democratic National Convention, he posted a fake image of someone who looks like Vice President Kamala Harris speaking at what appears to be a communist rally in Chicago, which features a red banner with a communist symbol. Before that, he reposted a fake video of himself dancing next to billionaire Elon Musk, one of his most vocal supporters. Just before the convention began, he reposted an image of Taylor Swift in an Uncle Sam outfit, assuming her support for his campaign that she never gave. These are the latest examples of Trump spreading images created by artificial intelligence tools to attack his opponents or create illusions of support for his own campaign. This is consistent with a long-standing strategy in which Trump amplifies messages – from QAnon supporters to those who deny the results of a fair election – to score political points and satisfy his base by promoting alternative realities. Some of the images and videos shared by Trump are cartoonish or obviously fake. But the rise of AI-generated content on political social media is worrying experts, who say it can be used to spread more insidious and believable disinformation. As fake images, videos and audio clips created by generative AI models gradually flood social media, they also risk undermining people’s trust in what they see and hear. “The AI-generated deepfakes of Taylor Swift are another example of the power of AI to create misinformation that deceives and defrauds voters,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, a progressive consumer rights organization… Read more
