More trees will be cleared on Church Road in Cheltenham next week as part of a PennDOT traffic project

PennDOT announced that tree removal operations will continue Monday, August 19, through Friday, August 23, on Route 73 (Church Road) in Cheltenham Township.

Emergency crews will be on duty from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this time, a lane closure with signage is planned on Greenwood Avenue at the intersection with Route 73.

The project is designed to improve traffic flow and safety on Route 73 at the intersections of Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road. The PennDOT contractor will add turning lanes at the intersections of Route 73 and Greenwood Avenue. Left turn lanes will be added on Route 73 and a northbound right turn lane will be added on Greenwood Avenue. The traffic signals on Route 73 at Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road will be connected.

The project, which is scheduled to be completed in fall 2027, was first announced in July.

“Drainage in the area will be improved and a new stormwater management system will be installed. Additionally, the sidewalk will be extended along the north side of Route 73 (Church Road) from Rices Mill Road to Greenwood Avenue,” PennDOT said in a statement. “Environmental protection measures associated with the Curtis Arboretum include tree removal and planting, wood storage and salvage for reuse, stone wall reconstruction, and seeding and replanting disturbed areas within the arboretum.”

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area as congestion and delays may occur. All planned activities are weather dependent.

Allan Myers, LP of Worcester, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor on the $10,824,555 project, which is 100 percent funded with federal funds, PennDOT said.
