Montgomery Parks, Casey Trees and Bartlett Tree Experts offer a week-long Tree Climbing Academy program for adults

This program is run in partnership with Casey Trees and Bartlett Tree Experts.

WHEATON, Md. – Montgomery Parks, in partnership with Casey Trees and Bartlett Tree Experts, is offering a new week-long academy that will introduce adult participants to professional tree climbing techniques used in forestry and arboriculture. The academy will be held November 4-8, 2024, at Wheaton Regional Park. It is open to newcomers who want to explore these fields, as well as individuals already working in the arboriculture industry who want to improve their skills. An estimated 20 applicants will be accepted.

What: Tree Climbing Academy
When: 4 – 8 November 2024
Where: Wheaton Regional Park, 2000 Shorefield Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20902
Details: Interested candidates must apply and be accepted into the Academy. Submit your application here. Applications will be accepted until Friday, September 20, 2024.

During the five-day Tree Climbing Academy, experienced instructors guide participants through various aspects of tree climbing, including safe work concepts, ropes, knots, climbing saddles and equipment, and industry best practices. Participants learn how to place ropes in trees, ascend vertically, and navigate the canopy of small and large trees. Upon completion, participants receive a Tree Climbing Academy certificate and a $500 scholarship from Casey Trees.

Applicants should be:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Opportunity to attend the entire week of the academy
  • Would you like to start or advance a career in the tree care industry?
  • Preferred candidates should be in good physical shape, be able to hoist themselves vertically up a tree, have a positive attitude and enjoy physical work.

“The Tree Climbing Academy is a fantastic opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in tree climbing and tree care,” said Amanda Aparicio, director of horticulture and urban forestry for Montgomery Parks. “We are proud to partner with Casey Trees and Bartlett Tree Experts to offer this unique program. The scholarship provided by Casey Trees to complete the academy will help reduce financial barriers and make this training accessible to more people.”
