Montana: Notice on property tax refund

HELENA – The Montana Department of Revenue (DOR) will soon distribute its second round of property tax refunds to eligible Montana taxpayers as part of a property tax relief package that Governor Greg Gianforte will sign into law in 2023.

The property tax refund is a refund of up to $675 of property taxes paid on a primary residence. To qualify, you must have owned and lived in a Montana residence for at least seven months in 2023 and paid property taxes on that residence. Properties owned by a legal entity or irrevocable trusts are not eligible for a refund.

For a complete list of qualifications, visit getmyrebate.mt.gov.

Montana residents must apply for the refund between August 15 and October 1, 2024. The quickest way for taxpayers to apply for the refund is online. Applying for a property tax refund online should only take a few minutes.

All property tax refunds will be sent by check.

Last year, Governor Gianforte provided Montana homeowners with the largest property tax refund in state history, along with permanent reforms that saved property taxpayers more than $120 million. Taken together, these immediate actions implemented this year and ongoing have more than offset the average Montana homeowner’s property tax increase.

In addition to providing short-term relief, Governor Gianforte established a bipartisan property tax task force to develop permanent reforms to provide significant long-term property tax relief to homeowners.
