Monroe Police: Thieves steal truck in Hammertown and wallet in Georges Lane

MONROE, CT – Early Sunday morning, a resident on Hammertown Road received a report of the theft of a red 2017 GMC Sierra. Police say the thieves may have used it to get to Georges Lane, where they stole a wallet from an unlocked 2021 Subaru Forester.

“The two locations are less than two miles apart,” Lt. Kevin McKellick said Monday, adding that the Georges Lane resident described the truck used by the thieves as a dark-colored pickup truck.

A garage camera video captured the theft of the GMC Sierra from the Hammertown Road driveway at 3 a.m., police said.

The victim, a 52-year-old man, told officers he left his truck unlocked with the keys inside. Video showed the suspects checking the door handles before getting into the unlocked truck. The theft was discovered at 8:55 a.m.

At approximately 3:22 a.m., officers were called to Georges Lane because three suspicious individuals were driving through the neighborhood in a dark pickup truck, getting out of the truck and checking the door handles of the vehicles.

The wallet stolen from the unlocked 2021 Subaru Forester contained gift cards, credit cards, a debit card, cash, a driver’s license and a health insurance card, according to the report.

The thefts are being investigated by the Monroe Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.

Not his boss

A 60-year-old Monroe man was working in his home office on August 19 when he received an email from someone claiming to be the head of his law firm.

The “boss” asked him for his cell phone number and sent him a text message telling him to go to the nearest grocery store and buy $1,500 worth of Sephora gift cards. When he questioned this strange request, his “boss” told him it was for customers. The man bought the cards, took a photo of the serial numbers and sent it via text message.

After he sent the message, the number was blocked and he realized he had been scammed, police said.

Lt. Kevin McKellick advises residents not to take photos of the serial numbers on their gift cards and send them to anyone.

The incident is under investigation.

Domestic incident

A 21-year-old man was arrested on a warrant for disturbing the peace and third-degree assault after his father told police his son punched him in the face during an argument at his home on Fan Hill Road on August 21.

The incident was reported at 11:18 a.m. and police later found the son in Shelton.

He was held on $5,000 bail, then served with another warrant charging him with failure to appear in court on a March theft charge. Bail was set at $35,000. His new court date was August 22.
