Malayalam star Mohanlal has resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). According to media reports, all the members of the executive committee have submitted their resignations together. This all started after shocking revelations about the Malayalam film industry came to light in the Hema Committee report released on Monday. According to PTI, this report talked about the sexual harassment faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The report also said that women are offered jobs with the demand of sexual relations. After the Hema Committee report was released last Monday, many actors came forward and accused other actors, filmmakers and technicians of sexual harassment.

Before Mohanlal, director Ranjith and actor Siddique resigned from their senior positions at a state film academy and AMMA respectively. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also called a high-level meeting with senior police officials to investigate the atrocities faced by women artists.

Details of the Hema Committee report

Many women artists have alleged that they were forced to compromise even before starting work. Since then, concerns have been rising regarding the safety of these women artists in the Malayalam film industry. We would like to inform you that the government set up the Justice Hema Committee in 2019. The committee investigated the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. This report revealed important details regarding sexual harassment, exploitation and abuse of women.

Five years after the report was submitted to the government, a copy of the report was given to the media under the RTI Act. The report states that women artistes have been subjected to harassment, including incidents of drunken men knocking on the doors of the rooms of female artistes in the film industry.
