MoDOT is adding travel safe zones to US 63 near West Plains

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (KY3) – MoDOT is adding two new travel safe zones in Missouri.

MoDOT previously placed these in the St. Louis area. However, officials decided to add new zones along U.S. 63 in Howell and Oregon counties.

“US 63 is unique in that it is a major north-south corridor for travelers,” said Sgt. Eddie Young of the Missouri Highway Patrol.

These five-mile safe traffic zones are located in areas where fatal accidents have occurred frequently. Over the next year, drivers traveling on US 63 between West Plains and the Arkansas state line will pass through these travel-safe zones.

“And when you combine alternating passing lanes where often people are driving too fast, trying to get in front of pedestrians, and hitting someone slowing down to stop and turn left,” says Sgt. Jung.

In addition to warning drivers about the area, expect an increased law enforcement presence. Sergeant Eddie Young of the Missouri State Highway Patrol says when drivers are pulled over and given a ticket, they can expect the fine to be doubled.

“Double fines for traffic violations will be issued in identified areas in the hope of creating a stronger deterrent and giving people greater incentive to pay attention to their active duty while driving on the road,” said Sgt. Jung. And to be prepared for events that could lead to an accident.”

The travel safe zones began on Monday.

“We are trying to reduce the number of fatal and injured accidents in these zones. They are both only about 5 miles long. They have one in Howell County and one in Oregon County,” said Sgt. Jung.
