    MLB playoffs: Yankees advance to ALCS with win over Royals; Guardians force ALDS Game 5 against Tigers

    The New York Yankees advanced to their 11th ALCS appearance since 2000 with a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals in Game 4 on Thursday, and the Cleveland Guardians avoided elimination and forced a Game 5 with a 5-4 victory about the Detroit Tigers.

    The Yankees will now go home and get some rest since the ALCS doesn’t begin until Monday. The Guardians and Tigers, meanwhile, return to Cleveland for Game 5 on Saturday.

    The Yankees defeated the Royals 3-1 in Game 4 on Thursday, with the final score reflecting the final standings of their ALDS as New York advances to the American League Championship Series.

    Thanks to a leadoff single from Gleyber Torres and an RBI double from Juan Soto, the Yankees got on the field after just three pitches. Gerrit Cole took it from there, pitching an outstanding seven innings with six hits and one allowed, no walks and four strikeouts. The offense turned in a run in the fifth and sixth innings, with Giancarlo Stanton and Torres each having two hits and an RBI. Luke Weaver made the save with a clean ninth inning.

    The Royals couldn’t do much on offense other than their hit in the sixth inning, when Bobby Witt Jr. hit a single to right field and Vinnie Pasquantino followed with an RBI double. They went 0-2 with runners in scoring position, leaving four men on base. Kansas City starter Michael Wacha pitched 4 2/3 innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed, a walk and two strikeouts.

    The Yankees will have to wait until Saturday night to find out whether they will face the Guardians or Tigers in the ALCS on Monday.

    The Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers will play the deciding Game 5 of their ALDS on Saturday.

    David Fry’s two-run, pinch-hit home run off Beau Brieske gave Cleveland a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning of Game 4 on Thursday. Fry later drove in another run in the ninth with a safety squeeze bunt that scored Brayan Rocchio.

    Closer Emmanuel Clase had a chance to make amends for the three-run home run he gave up in Game 2 when Guardians manager Stephen Vogt brought him in with one out and two runs on in the eighth inning.

    Clase retired the first two batters he faced. He gave up a run in the ninth on a leadoff double by Justyn-Henry Malloy and an RBI grounder by Jace Jung. Clase then struck out Matt Vierling to complete the 5-4 win and force Game 5.

    The Tigers are expected to start Tarik Skubal in Game 5, while Matthew Boyd will likely opt for the Guardians.

      Cleveland almost increased its 4-3 lead at the start of the eighth period. Will Brennan found himself on second base after a two-out double and likely would have scored if an Andres Gimenez grounder had gotten through for a hit.

      But Colt Keith’s jump stop kept the ball in the infield and he threw Gimenez out at first to end the inning.

      At the end of the eighth quarter, the Tigers come on the scene.

      Giancarlo Stanton led off the second with a double, but after that the Yankees went down in order. In the bottom half, Gerrit Cole remained efficient and sent the Royals down in an orderly fashion.

      Detroit manager AJ Hinch brought in the right-hander Brieske to face Fry, and a wild pitch moved Kwan to second. Then Brieske hit a 97.5 mph fastball right into the middle of the strike zone, and Fry didn’t miss his target.
