MLB Playoffs Recap: Dodgers face Yankees in the World Series

No matter how many times we’ve written it here, it feels good to say: The Yankees are playing in the 2024 World Series. They completed the ALCS in just five games, so there was some waiting to see who they would face in the Fall Classic would dance.

The 2024 NLCS was a back-and-forth affair with significant wins, with the winners averaging over nine runs per game in the first five games. However, the Mets were tied at 3-2 in the series with two games remaining in Los Angeles. Ultimately, that trend continued as the Dodgers offense remained under control and set up a star-studded 2024 World Series.

Things really got going in Game 6 when a very wild Michael Kopech set the stage for the Mets in the first inning. Francisco Lindor led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch from the Dodgers right-hander. Later, as Lindor advanced to third, he was shot by Pete Alonso, who turned things around with a looping infield blast over the mound.

The Mets had an early 1-0 lead, but couldn’t hold it for long. With Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernández in the bags, Tommy Edman began his big night with a double down the left field line, scoring both runners and instantly turning the Dodgers’ deficit into a lead.

Here, too, the experienced energy supplier was not finished yet and doubled his damage at the end of the third period. With Hernández on base with be On second at bat, Edman continued his fantastic LCS performance by blasting a two-run home run into the crowded left field seats.

They weren’t finished in the third inning either. With Max Muncy on base, Will Smith got in on the two-run home run with a shot of his own to center field. The Fresh Prince’s offense put LA ahead in Game 6 with a convincing 6-1 score.

Muncy’s walk in the previous inning ended Sean Manaea’s outing after less than three innings, leaving the Mets to rely on their bullpen and a comeback offensive attack. They actually started to break down in the top of the fourth quarter when Mark Vientos hit a two-run pitch to get the Mets back on track.

Carlos Mendoza didn’t want to risk the deficit getting even bigger as the heart of the Dodgers’ order approached, so he turned to Edwin Díaz as early as the fourth inning. The electric right-hander did everything he could realistically ask for, pitching two scoreless innings in relief before being lifted for Ryne Stanek.

Still up 6-3, the Dodgers were able to put a runner in scoring position midway through the sixth. With Ohtani lining up, that means an almost automatic hit these days, and the likely MVP delivered with a looping single to center field. The base hit gave him an unimaginable 18 in his last 22 with runners in scoring position, giving the Dodgers a 7-3 lead.

The Mets were able to bridge a run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly and cut the deficit back to three runs. Unfortunately for Mets and Subway Series fans, however, the Dodgers ambushed the Mets pitching staff one final time in the eighth inning. An RBI double by Mookie Betts got the party started, while a sac fly by Hernández and a hit by Enrique Hernández got the Dodgers into double figures again.

Game 6 was the fourth game in which the Dodgers scored at least eight runs in the League Championship Series, making it difficult for the Mets to climb the mound.

Blake Treinen entered his second inning in the ninth inning looking for three outs to decide the 2024 World Series match. The Mets showed a little life with a couple of two-out hits and a run, but it wasn’t nearly enough as Treinen induced a 4-3 groundball to close out the 2024 NLCS. The pennant is LA’s fourth in the last eight seasons and first since 2020.

Not surprisingly, Tommy Edman took home the NLCS MVP award by going 11 of 27 with a home run and 11 RBI over the six-game slate. He and the strong Dodger lineup will open the World Series against the Yankees on Friday in Los Angeles. The extended break will give both teams some rest and, for the Yankees’ sake, hopefully cool down the red-hot LA bats.
