MLB player will make bizarre history on Monday by playing in one game for two teams

CNN

Boston Red Sox player Danny Jansen will make Major League Baseball history on Monday by playing for two teams in one game, a team spokesman confirmed to CNN.

The Red Sox will face the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park on Monday, ending a game between the two teams that was suspended until June 26.

This is where it gets interesting.

Jansen, a catcher who was then a member of the Blue Jays, was in the middle of batting when the game was suspended due to weather. About a month later, he was traded to Boston.

Since the game has now resumed and Jansen is no longer playing for the Blue Jays but for the Red Sox, the game report will show that the 29-year-old will play for both teams, if he plays at all.

On Friday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that he wanted to help Jansen accomplish something no other major league player has ever done before.

“He’s going to play Game 1, by the way. For anyone who’s seen the story, I’d like to get it out there,” Cora told the Boston Herald.

Monday’s game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET and will resume at the start of the second inning with the score tied 0-0 and Jansen at bat. However, Toronto will replace Jansen as a pinch-hitter and he is announced as a defensive replacement for the Red Sox, replacing catcher Reese McGuire, who was designated for assignment by the team last month.

Cora said he received text messages from sports reporters asking if Jansen would catch the ball.

“You know what? Yes, he’s catching it!” Cora added. “Let’s make history.”

Earlier this week, Jansen appeared on the Sportsnet podcast “Blair and Barker” and called the potential situation “oddity.”

“What an oddity, isn’t it,” Jansen said. “What a crazy, crazy thing for baseball, this game. People have been asking me and coming to me to talk about it and stuff, so it’s going to be cool.”

Later Monday, the Red Sox begin a four-game series against the Jays, with Jansen potentially suiting up for Boston, which just became the answer to a future trivia question.
