Mjekevu shines in Toulouse’s win against Lyon

Toulouse fought back to a 30-23 victory over 14-man Lyon at the Stade Ernest Wallon, pushing their opponents into second place in Group 2 of the European Challenge Cup.

The hosts dominated the first half to celebrate their first European victory of the season, inspired by Wandile Mjekevu, who scored twice.

Following their 17-9 win at Lyon in the Top 14 last month, Toulouse seized the initiative on home soil and Jean-Marc Doussain converted two penalties after Romain Ntamack’s early effort was disallowed.

Mjekevu then scored a brilliant first try – bursting through the Lyon defence – and the same man quickly scored again, with Doussain extending the clear lead with two successful conversions.

The first half continued to be a bleak one for the visitors, as Timilai Rokoduru was sent off for a high tackle. However, two penalties from Jonathan Pelissie got them on the scoreboard and the half-time lead was reduced to 20-6.

After the break, Toulouse seemed to be back on track thanks to Yoann Huget’s goal, but Lyon responded with a third penalty from Pelissie and a converted effort from Theo Belan.

And although Sofiane Guitoune added a fourth home try, the visitors ensured a nerve-wracking finish as Jone Tuva scored – Frederic Michalak converted – and Mjekevu wasted a late chance for a hat-trick as Toulouse narrowly crossed the finish line.
