Missouri State football tops Indiana State in Week 8 game

Missouri State football posted its first five-game winning streak since 1996 by pulling away from Indiana State in the second half of its annual home game.

The Bears (5-2, 3-0 MVFC) defeated the Sycamores (2-5, 1-2 MVFC) 46-21 on Saturday afternoon at Plaster Stadium in Springfield.

Not since coach Del Miller’s second season as head coach have the Bears won five straight before finishing 7-4. Not even Bobby Petrino won five straight in his three seasons leading the program.

The win helped second-year coach Ryan Beard surpass his win total from his 4-7 debut.

Missouri State football quarterback Jacob Clark continues to play at a high level

Starting quarterback Jacob Clark continued his winning streak with another high-level performance that makes him one of the better gunslingers in Missouri State history.

Clark delivered his fifth consecutive 300-yard passing game, completing 22 of 27 for 379 yards and three touchdowns. His only fumble was an interception, his first since Week 2 at Ball State.

Clark rushed for a five-yard score late in the fourth quarter, putting the icing on the cake.

Missouri State’s offensive line had some issues

Not everything was perfect offensively, as Clark was sacked five times, including a strip sack that turned into an Indiana State touchdown shortly after.

The Bears’ offensive line had improved in recent weeks, but the five were the most they had allowed since losing to Montana in Week 1.

There were some good signs in how the Bears ran the ball: Jacardia Wright rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns and Jayden Becks rushed for 47 yards. Without the sacks, it would have been the Bears’ best ground game since the win over Lindenwood in Week 3.

Missouri State had answers to all of Indiana State’s points

Missouri State answered every scoring drive Indiana State put together. The Sycamores could never quite grasp the momentum when they had a chance to make the game more competitive.

After Waynesville graduate Shen Butler-Lawson scored for the Trees, the Bears responded with an eight-play scoring drive. After Indiana State committed two turnovers at Missouri State, Clark threw touchdown passes.

The Bears responded when they needed to, and that’s what good teams should do against a team like Indiana State.
